Question Received a new gun!!!

My grandfather just gave a me a shotgun and i was wandering how much it's worth. It's not forsale i just want to know how to treat it. Take it hunting or put it in the safe. It's a 16ga. J.C. Higgins Sear Roebuck bolt action shotgun. Just wandering if it's worth anything.

Thanks

Please dont be offended, but that really isn't worth much $ wise. But, since it is an heirloom its probably worth big bucks to you personally. Shoot it and enjoy.

Sears(Sears-Roebuck) used to sell those at their stores and through mail order catalog prior to the 1968 federal gun law. They weren't the prettiest of all guns, but countless hunters used them year after year reliably.

It's like your grandparents weddeing picture, not a lot of monitary value, but irreplacible and priceless to some people.

I have a picture of my wife and I when I was 16 and ahe was 14, if I couldn't get a copy I wouldn't sell it for 10,000 dollars.

That same shotgun (JC Higgins 16 ga, bolt action) was my first shotgun given to me by my dad in 1963. I still have it. Some things to do prior to shooting it.
1. Give it a good going over, its an old shotgun so you want to insure everything is safe. Especially check the locking lugs on the bolt, they should not be rounded off, if so, be very careful.
2. Remember this will only chamber and shoot 2 3/4 inch shells. I would stay with low brass shells (they are a little lower in pressure).

Other than that be safe and have fun.

BTW I also now have my dad's JC Higgins pump action 12 ga.. Both guns ar ein good shape and they will be handed down as heirlooms (although not necessarily to shoot, but to keep them in the family with the memories).

I have the same one given to me by my grandfather as well. Like said not worth much $ but I would not sell it for any amount of $. I use it for pheasant, even though it's a heavy SOB.-BB
