They were marketed in the 70s by S&W, as they were trying to branch out into long guns and possibly corner the Police arms market. I had one, it was okay and worked well. It was a refugee from a local PD, I sold it because aftermarket parts weren't available and I already had a Mossberg 590. Basically the 916 isn't as adaptable as more recent shotguns, and the stocks are wood. That's about it. They seldom command more than about $100-$150. Nothing wrong with the 916 at all. Just a little outdated. Also check the firing pin, mine broke at some point and I ended up machining a new one out of an old furniture bolt. No idea when it broke, as it still functioned normally with a broken firing pin. Can't say whether your "borther-in-law" [sic] found the right gun, but it's a great value.

When the S&W Riot guns came out in the 1970s they were well received in the south, where I worked. They would probably have made the grade but they were in direct competition with the Ithaca DSPS Police Specials in all their incarnations and it was really hard to beat an Ithaca. The dept where I was had Winchester 1200s and we all preferred Ithacas and the S&W over the slam fire Winchesters. They also began to offer blue box "armor piercing" buckshot and slugs for their shotguns and they were really nice. Good, hard alloy. Of course, you could buy the S&W .357mag hard alloy rounds and also the KTW "green weenies". In the day before the liberal politicians discovered "cop killer bullets". Also before the times when body armor became commonplace. I bought a S&W 916 and put it in the safe in new condition and she still sits there today. I like it and think it's welll worthy of being part of a collection.
