this post interests me because i hav an old 12 gauge from 1898 i tried putting a 2 3/4 shell in it it fit but seemed like thi tip was way too tight where the chamber necked down so i would assume this gun takes 2 1/2 inch shells?

I would have the chamber checked my a gunsmith if you are not sure. Firing a shell larger than the chamber will most likely not be a happy ending for you or your gun.

Probably so..

Alot of the older guns were 2-1/2" or 2-5/8" depending if it was American or foreign.

A 2-3/4" shell is about 2-1/2" when crimped. I cant remember what a 2-1/2 or 2-5/8" paper shell is crimped - but it'd be less than 2-1/2" for sure - but the chamber would be the shell's advertised length. You have to leave room in the chamber for the crimp to unfold when it fires.

i believe the gun is american made it dont appear to be a damascus barrel so im thinking now that i heard of those minishells thanks to this post i might give those a run i think they are 1 3/4 inch forgot what aguilla website said but they are small. the chamber should handle it i guess whats your advice. im not daring enough to to attempt 2 3/4 shells that seems like an accident waiting to happen. just one last question so im sure damascus barrels look like wrapped steel on the outside right? mine is all smooth outside and in other than some rust iutside and a little pitting inside
