Question Mossberg ?????????

I have a question. I have a Mossberg 12 ga shotgun that I bought a few years ago for home defense. I want to get a shorter barrel for it. I know the limit is 18.5". I am looking to get one that length or maybe 20". The shotgun I have is a maverick 77 but I can't find a barrel for it. so my ? is will a mossberg 500 work?
Any help would be appreciated. Oh yeah what is the going price for a barrel? Thanks for any and all help!!

Are you sure it isn't a Maverick 88? You can put a 500 barrel on a Maverick 88 as long as the magazine capacity is the same. Does your Maverick hold 6 or 8 shells?

ETA: http://www.maverickarms.com/pages/barrels.htm (the 6 shot barrels part # corresponds with the 500 barrel #)

LOL yeah It's an 88 not a 77. The keys are right next to each other I must have hit the wrong one. It holds 6 shells. I would like to get a higher mag capacity.

After getting all the parts to modify it, you'd probably be close in price to buying another inexpensive shotgun. You can't just buy an extension tube like the Mossberg 590, Remington 870, etc.

Actually the barrel minimum is 18 inches, with a total over all length of 26 inches minimum.

Yep, he is right... Mossberg sells an 18.5" barrel and many people cut them to 18.5" or 18.25" as a "just in case" measure, but the real minimum is 18". With the length of the receiver in question, I don't think you'd be able to reach the 26" OAL minimum without first violating the 18" barrel minimum.

Thats why I was thinking of maybe getting a 20". Then I might get a folding stock for it. Iam not really worried about getting a longer magazine.

Have your current barrel cut down to desired length, or do it yourself.

Folding stock gun is measure for overall length with the stock open.

Brownells has a "High capacity" hit for a Mossberg 500. 20" barrel with rifle sights and an 8 shot magazine for $150.
