Default cheapest ammo?

I'm gonna get a Mossberg Maverick Security model as soon as my govt. rebate check comes. It'll be my first shotgun, I just want to practice short range shooting, I won't be hunting or sport shooting. What would be the most economical, cheapest 12 gauge ammo to buy so I can get the most shooting? I'm a total newb here.

I would say go to Walmart and get birdshot if you are going to just target shoot with it. I am not sure what a box goes for now since the price of ammo has gone up but they have great prices on shotgun ammo.

Yeah, I'd do that. If this is going to be a defensive gun for you, you can get Wolf or Nobel buckshot or slugs to play around with, too. Buck and slugs are going to kick alot more than birdshot, so depending on your purpose, you might look into that. Wolf buck, about $3 for 5 rounds.

The remington, federal, winchester etc "game loads" that are often in #8 shot. The seem to be most available on shelves around start of hunting season or right before - late August, September. But some are probably out there now, but look for sales come hunting season.

thanks guys, I went to Walmart today. Found the big 3 all had the #8 for $21.88 per 100. That's what I'll start out with and just do as much practicing as I can afford.
