Default Looking for a shotgun for home defense

I am a pistol man myself, however if there was one thing my grandfather tought me; if you going to throw down in your own home, why wouldn't you want a shotgun. That being said, I'm looking for input on a reliable shotgun for home defense. I have had my eye on the mossberg 500 Tactical 6 shot and the 500 Cruiser 8 shot.

Second question.
What are people's feeling on pistol grips vs. adjustible stocks?

I personally like the Remington 870, but I've heard good things about Mossbergs. I don't care for Mossberg's action's, but that is just me. Not to contradict myself, but if I found a deal on a Mossberg, I would probably buy it.

Second Question: Whatever you are comfortable with. I like the thumbhole stock myself, but everyone is different.

Are you allowed to have an 'assault' shotgun in Philly?

I would recommend a Mossberg 835 or 935 turkey gun, real short, and hits like a mack truck...with the right loads

Good question, I'm not actually sure.

I like the Mossberg platform. They are good shotguns. I like the full stock but that is a matter of taste. What ever you get put a ton of rounds down range. Practice with 00 and slugs as well as lots of birdshot to get used to the action. Take a class in shotgun self defense if you can.

Do not worry about the 'assault' ban in Philly. If we start to stress illegal laws buy Nutters then we lose. If you want a higher capasity shotgun get one. It is MY understanding that the law is written attempts to take away citizens right to own firearms that have a capasity of 16 rounds or more.

Check out this thread when you get a minute.
Lots of ideas there.

I like a pistol grip stock, as opposed to a pistol grip. It gives you options.
(And if you've never shot one with a pistol grip, you may want to try it first!)

Thanks for the great information. Being new to shotguns, I seem to remember someone telling me that it was illegal to have slugs for a shotgun in philly?

My opinion. Get a pump, they are more reliable than a semi. Get a stock, not a pistol grip. The shotgun is a difficult weapon to fire with a pistol grip. If you wish to add anything to the shotgun, add only things that you actually need, I suggest a light and nothing else. Will you NEED a barrel shroud/heat shield? NO. Do you need a tango down style pump? NO. Do you need a thirty shell capacity shell holder on the stock or frame? NO. Get a shotgun that is easy to use, get familiar with it, and for goodness sake, if you are going to have a loaded shotgun in the house, keep it loaded. You are not in the movies, and racking a shotgun will do little to deter an intruder. Oh, I have a bone stock Rem 870 that will serve the purpose.
