6.8mm spc/ar

hello all
anyone here playing around with the 6.8mm spc in the ar ?
if interested heres a update on mine.
powders used- imr 4198 h4895 h335
115 gr rp with h4895 seems to be the best so far 2427 fps avg.
no signs of excess pressure.
with 16 in barrel sd of 3.9 fps. 10 round avg.
silver state factory 110 gr sp 2539 fps avg
with 16 in barrel sd of 2.5 fps! 10 round avg.
hornady factory 110 v-max 2612 fps avg.
with 16 in barrel sd of 1.7 fps!! 10 round avg. (very accurate) 100 meters.

soon to try some x10 seems to have potential.
pulled apart a silver state factory seems to have a duplex ball powder in it.
note on buffer in m4 this cartridge is high bolt speed in carbine buffer
system i added a heavier weight to buffer helped alot.
later replaced the buffer with enidine hydraulic unit works much better!
this unit is similar to the one used in m249. seems to be a good fix
slows bolt speed down makes follow up shots much quicker. and
stops the beating of the bolt/buffer. factory may have the gas port just alittle
large for this cal. but iam sure they all opt for reliability
i may try this in the 5.56 colt i have just to see what it does.
note on duracoat , i did my m14 2 weeks ago in o.d. green and am highly
impressed with it , very nice durable finish. ill let you know how it holds up

How do you define "very accurate?" What 5 round groups @ 100yards or meters are you getting with that load?

v-max groups as follows
1st string
5 shot cold clean barrel .77 in. 100 m
2 string same target and bull
10 min. cool down opened to
1.37 in. 100 m
this was with eotech 522 and 3x mag.
and my old eyes.
little pricey for me to shoot on regular basis.
my reloads with 115 r/p bullet all were just
over moa. if i did my part, just the velocitys are down alittle from
factory stuff. no more room in case.
i dont normally count 5 round groups
20 or 30 at same target gives a better picture
but still working on loads.
v-max reloads to come soon.

That's good that you use more than 3 rounds in groups..I find it interesting when people brag about their group size and it's only a 3rd group. Many folks seem to fear shooting 5 rd groups for fear of getting that flyier.

I favor Hornady bullets over all others. I know that there are tons of good bullets from Sierra, but for my money...Hornady gets my money. I especially like the A/V max bullets.

The one thing I dislike about the 6.8SPC is that there aren't a lot of bullet weights for that caliber. I have been going back and forth about buying the 6.5 Grendel. I like the bullet weights offered in the 6.5.

the 6.5 is a good one,maybe better than the 6.8
in the distance. but the 6.8 is here to stay(ruger mini)
rem backing.i have not tried the 130's yet but i think
the cap of the case is going to be the limiting factor.
if you dont plan on to much practice/plinking
i would not be afraid of the 6.5mm
the reason i went with the 6.8 was mags were
cheaper(i figured out how to convert the 5.56 mags)
with a follower mod.(steel or stainless steel mags only)
and i had some real time use of the round in field conditions.
its a quantum leap ahead of the 5.56
and the zero is very close ,dead on at 50m
1.5 high at 100m -.5 at 200 with the 115gr .recoil very mild
same energy at 200 that 5.56 has at the muzzle,and really
how far are you going to shoot at something with a 16" carbine.
keep us posted if you get the 6.5, (if i just had the money) hahahaha

Well, I hear AA is a PITA to deal with because Bill is a control freak. There are 6.5 Grendel uppers that are running in the $500 range. I have been considering the OverWatch upper or the Sabre Defence upper. SD barrells are amazing accurate, so those are the two uppers that I'd buy.

I'm not impressed with the Ruger Mini series, so just because the Mini is chambered in the 6.8 doesn't impress me. I also don't get the 6.8 in the Remington "tactical." The 6.8 or 6.5 make sense in an AR platform, but I don't see the point in a bolt action. If I wanted a 6mm, I'd get the 6PPC or .260 in a bolt gun.

Do you have access to steel targets? I'd be interested in hearing the results on steel with the 6.8 SPC. I like to shoot at reactionary targets versus paper. Paper is nice when developing a load or to sight in, but after that it gets a little boring. I could shoot at steel all day long.

correct 6.5 or 6.8 in anything but ar type platform would be silly
they do make a big improvement to 5.56 in ar tho
i'am real fortunate to have my shooting range on my property
200m, nice pavilion, pistol distances,but no steel yet. i plan
on putting some up,i can get free steel disks that are .750 thick
for free from work. just need to weld up some stands. the best
reactionary range i have shot at is inchon at parris island.(random distance
to 600m) takes some skill to hit them all without a sight change quickly!
i,ll post some pics when i get the steel made.

3/4" steel should do the trick for you...especially if the targets are beyond 100 yards. Not sure where you are located in PA, but it sounds like you have the ideal range. If I want to shoot at steel, I must travel over 1.5 hours to get to the farm I worked on as a kid. I have access to 600 yards there. I just need to go there and build some more steel swingers.

Here is a link to a guy that makes some really good targets. I like his #2 targets...I'm thinking of buying one, so I can see how his works and build my own. I have a place that I can buy AR500 steel from, so that's what I'd be using.
