Well I feel relatively qualified to field this question as I am a father of 6, 4 of them are boys.

This is easy. There are two toys that all my boys played with constantly... Mega Blocks (you can buy a little wagon full of them, and the wagon is fun for them to haul around the house), and the best of all:

Friction cars and trucks. You know, the ones you have to roll on the floor to get them started, then they go on their own power... All my boys loved them, and if you buy good quality ones they last a long, long time.

There are lots of other things out there, but these are 2 that I can guarantee will get used.

One is a great birthday, great photo op with the messy cake incident  and even if you buy them the most expensive toy in the world, their favorite is going to be the cheap old mega blocks or that friction powered dump truck from Uncle Chaqrlie

Enjoy and congrats!

Get him a really cool baby blanket...so when he is 6 and it looks like a moth-eaten rag..you can smile with pride! He will need a favorite sleeping pal too. My twins are 6 and while they don't care where Teddy and Rabbit are for weeks at a time, they will revert back to crying babies in quick order, if they're blankies go missing. I forget how sensitive they CAN be about them.

that is so true Mason has more toys then I can count, he loves to rip out all the DVD's in our collection. Mess them all up and then go crawl over to another part of the house to make a mess haha. My wife will go and place the DVD's back in order and there he goes disregarding all of his toys to rip them back out. It's hilarious. I joked with my wife that I was going to buy him an AR-15 for his 1st b-day.

Mosin M44? (kidding, kidding)

I always liked to tinker with things. Maybe something he could build like lego's or something. I'm not the best with gifts, so who knows.

The "Mega Blocks" I mentioned above are basically large Legos geared more for the toddlers
