Default Re: Favorite Rifle Caliber and Why?

boy, thats actually a hard question, since I have so many.

I'd have to go provisional based on use, since one caliber is not good for all things.

General plinking: 22LR has to top it, for the obvious...cheap, fun, and so many different guns chambered for it.

specific plinking:-) 7.62x39, bar none. an AK and a case of ammo and a few buddies leads to a good afternoon and a hole in eveything you set up to shoot at.

hunting: small game, again 22LR. Large game, 308, there is nothing that walks this earth cannot be killed with a 308.

but bar none, my most favorite caliber ever has to be my 50 BMG rifle, the Serbu BFG-50. Firing this thing is like being IN an explosion, but not getting exploded.

Up to 2500M out, if it absolutely, positively has to have a hole in it, or possibly be on FIRE, make no substitute.

BTW guys, if anybody wants to go shooting in the gilbertsville/pottstown area, and has a place to shoot a 50, or automatic weapons gimme a yell and I'll drag the beast out:-)

I'm another vote for the "it depends on the purpose" crowd. For hunting whitetails, I like my .243, For "plinking", either a .17 or .22 (because ammo is CHEAP), and for SHTF, then probably a Ruger mini-14 with LOTS of high capacity clips.

I'm a sucker for .50BMG military rifles, because of the game HALO. Almost all the human guns were worthless in that game, but the berret was beautifully destructive to opposing forces for it's range, and unreal power compared to other calibers.

After I retire I'll get myself one, and take up long ranges.

My favorite small game/turkey gun is my Savage 24 V in 22 Hornet/20 guage. I download the hornets to 1500 fps using Speer 46 gr flat noses designed for use of the .218 Bee in the Marlin lever. Does a great job, and is also super accurate. I'm also modifying a Savage 24C-DL into a pack gun( I enjoy hiking/backpacking) in 22Mag/20. Hopefully, it'll still be as accurate, now that I cut the bbls down to 18 1/2.

My primary deer rifle is my old NEF Handi in 45/70 with a semi-custom curly maple stock. 400 gr Speers at around 1900 fps work well...28 deer in 30 shots. Backup is my old Ruger #1 in 6MM Rem or my old Krag.

Touch question.
These are my favorites for specific purposes:
Groundhogs .19 Badger
Long range metallics .45-90 Sharps
Medium range metallics .32-40 Winchester
Don't hunt anything else but have the firearms up to .505 Gibbs. (not a fun gun to shoot)

7.5 x 55 "Swiss," because my K31 is so cool and accurate.

I could shoot 5.56 all day with a smile......that being said, my favorite hunting round is the 7STW, because I've put the time in to work some screaming loads.

But...the most fun I ever had was shooting bowling pins with a .460 Weatherby (500gr solids). BOOM!

My favorite caliber is .22lr. Why? Because that's the what my rifle will shoot. That is all.

Mostly I like the 22lr. I use it for small game and turkey in my single six and chipmunk pistols. But for deer I like my 7mm mag. I really like how it turns the snow pink for about 15' past the deer.
