seems the way to go / i was looking at a bushmaster for 900.00 / it had a carry handle/ this would be my first rifle and i want to know everything before i buy./ any input would be welcomed

Go flat top. If you want irons you can always add detachables......but if you ever want to add optics, it can be hard to work around the carry fixed handle.

I agree, flat top is the way to go, it you have a handle on the top and you want optics, your line of sight is going to be very high.

If it you buy a detachable carry-handle model-cool. (that's an A3) Now you can do whatever your purse and/or dreams can imagine. If you buy an A2 fixed-carry handle model..you limit yourself to that set of iron sights with the capability to add a scope on top..not ideal for future upgrades. Do it work? Depends on the job in mind. You gotta know where you heart will take ya..you know the real Assault rifle is still the 1st one..Henry Rifle?
