Default AR questions

The wife and I are looking to move more into the country and I am toying with the idea of getting an AR after the move. I was checking out the Bushmaster website and saw that they have a lot to choose from.

Since most of the firearms experience I have is handguns (I am not a hunter), can someone recommend a basic model for a beginner? Also, what caliber would be the best? It will be primarily for target...nothing like competition. I see that they do have ARs chambered for 9mm.

Also, does anyone know of a website which goes over the AR type rifle in detail?

Thanks.

Dave G

ETA: I forgot to ask...what restrictions, if any, are there in buying an AR? Any special license needed, etc.? Are there (currently...and hopefully not in the fututre) any add-ons which make it illegal? Sorry for all the questions, but I am new to the AR type weapons.

My personal choice was the Bushmaster M4A3 rifle.

This is a good site to check out and should help you;

I'm not sure how your local gunshops are where you are. But you may wish to buy it online and have it shipped through an FFL. A standard Bushmaster M4A3 is $1099 at all 3 local gunshops, which isn't a good price. Check Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, and the Equipment Exchange at AR15.com.

ETA: No special procedure for buying. Just like a long gun. If you buy from PA resident you can pay cash and go (no ffl transfer). The AKs/AR I built I got the receiver from PA residents so I didn't need to transfer through an FFL. Saves ya a couple bucks

If you ever in the future take a class with the AR, you'll be glad you had a 16" bbl model. There's something to be said for getting a flat-top model, too.

If the M4 flat top configuration is what you are looking for, you can pin a complete upper to a complete lower and have a nice rifle for $725 out the door. Never buy a complete AR rifle in a store if you can help it.

Buying the upper and lower seperate saves you 11% tax on the rifle, plus 6% Pa. state sales tax.

Putting the two sections together requires pushing two pins into place.

Exactly. Who would ever buy from a store when there's tons of off-paper ARs out there?
