Default Re: Ultralite50 50 BMG upper?

Thanks for all the info guys! Originally I wanted a Barret 99 but after buying all the other toys I have this year the funds are not there and I can't see spending that much on something I'm not gonna shoot much. Then I wanted the AR50 untill I held one at my favorite shop. That thing it big and heavy! I don't even think I could fit it in my safe and I don't feel like having to lug that think around!

So I'm down to an inexpensive upper conversion. I know the recoil will be harsh but I was thinking I could always get a better brake for it. I'm also......down the road........planning on getting the AAC Cyclops can for it which from what I read will take quite a bit of recoil out of it and amazingly enough make it hearing safe! So my shoulder will just have to pay the price for a bit.

I did look at the Bohica uppers. Nice! The sad thing is about 6 months ago there were 2 on gunbroker and I was about to grab one but chickened out. I guess I learned my lesson there. The Ultralite seems to be solidly built. I'm gonna do some more research on them online and maybe give them a call.

As far as reloading for them I do reload now but I would have to get another press to do the 50BMG and since I'm not planning on shooting hundreds of rounds per year with it I can't see the point of doing it. I was looking at Sumit for ammo as they seem to have a good rep and offer every load under the sun.

I also found these UltraMag 50 which are a bit more but have left side magazines holding 3 or 5 rds. They look very similar to the single shot but I'm unsure about having a mag sticking out the side or even the quality of the mags they would be using.

Rick Thorne is on a distinguished road
Default Re: Ultralite50 50 BMG upper?

I have always wondered what the recoil of a a$$ kicking 50 would do to a AR15 lower after a few hundred rounds? Elongate the pin holes, stress crack around them or worse?

There is a decent write up floating around somewhere, but in short, the AR lower holds up 100%.

Because of the design of the AR lower the recoil is transfered straight back to the stock. The pins do not get the recoil that one would think.

UPDATE

I did a little reading and decided that the Ultralite50 would be good enough for my purposes so I placed an order today for the 22" version. They said I should see it in less than 6 weeks. I then called my gunstore and had them order the DPMS California single shot lower for me.(no magwell) It is perfect for a 50 upper rifle as it will keep debris out of the action. Now I just need to pick out a good stock with soft padding.

I also found a deal for anyone interested........

Cheaper than dirt has Summit ball, AP and API ammo for only $41 per 10. Not a bad price for quality ammo IMHO. Needless to say I stocked up.

I will post a follow up once I get it together. Now I just have to wait and find a range that will let me shoot it.

From what I understand you can shoot them at the SGL as long as you arent shooting FMJ, so just grind a bit of the tip down to the lead and let'em rock. luckily I have a range that lets me, but I may have to go let'em roar at the SGL some day when its nice and cramped before the first day of the season.
