Great cartridge, flat shooting, hard hitting, hell of a round. I have 2 friends that shoot the .270 WSM and love them. I've personally taken my buddies Savage that's in .270 WSM out to 500 yards on a 10" paper plate and no problems whatsoever. I know that I'm gonna get some haet about this, lol, but everybody by now knows that I'm not the largest fan of the .308; I'll take the .270 or .270 WSM over the .308 anyday. If you have your heart set on a .270, it'll take pretty much any game in north America (some like something a little larger for bear, elk at longer range, etc) either way, it'll get the job done and can be loaded in so many different ways.
You can never go wrong with any quality bolt rifle. I like the remington 700's, but you still wouldn't do wrong with a savage, ruger, browning, etc. Just get something that you can afford that's not a garbage action, and that you can afford to feed (that's what matters because you get good with practice) and go to town. Best of luck. |

My dad bought a browning a-bolt in 270wsm a few years back. His rifle shoots great with his reloads, but has never shot factory loads to compare them.
I have shot his Browning and I can tell you that it has noticably less recoil than my 700 mountain rifle in270win. I have heard from others that the short mags have less recoil than their long action chamberings, even though they are burning a bit more powder. Try it, you'll like it!!!

I have a weatherby Vanguard subMOA 270. It shoots flat and is NASTY. I`m glad I`m behind the trigger. I love my 308 for plain ole shooting but my hunting rifle is 270WSM. Qtrborecrazy |

The rifle is for your fiance? Is she familiar with shooting rifles? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and some people will maybe disagree, but if she is not already used to shooting; I would NOT start her out on a .270 WSM. I like Weatherby vanguards, my best friend/hunting buddy has one in .300 winmag (old one with wood stocks). It's a very accurate rifle and never has any malfunctions or anything. Now the .300 winmag has a bit more recoil than the .270, but I've seen that .300 winmag scope bite 4 people, many of the times resulting in stitches. They're light rifles, that shoot well, but starting someone out on a .270, probably not the best idea. In my experience when women are learning, they usually do NOT like even moderate recoil. They will shoot a rifle 2 or 3 times, and then they want to put it down. If she's already a shooter and used to recoil, this might not be an issue with her.
If you are just starting her out on a rifle, I would seriously consider a .22. If you're doing this so she can hunt and this is going to be a hunting rifle, I'd look at .243. If you limit shot distances, you can deer with a .223 if it's legal in your county, so that's somethign to possibly consider as well. Either way, for a man that's already a shooter, the .270 is a great cartridge. PS, if $750 is out of your price range, and you're having to look at a vanguard, I'd seriously consider a Savage. They ain't quite as pretty as some other rifles, and the action isn't quite as smooth as some (cycle it, it'll smooth up some), but they are ALOT of rifle for the money. They're extremely accurate out of the box, if you get the accutrigger you can adjust it yourself, and they're rugged. Just some things to think about. |

I won a Kimber 8400 .270wsm at the local Safari Club Int. banquet this March. I just topped it with a Leupold VXIII Boone and Crockett 4.5 to 14. I haven't shot it yet but I have high hopes it will be a shooter.
