Default Fans of the 17HMR lets hear some stories......

I recently got a 17 HMR in the Savage 93 walmart style, added a BSA 8-32x contender and a 9-13'' bi-pod. It shoots tiny groups at 100yds and is a real threat to any thing I point it at. I want to hear how other people like or hate the rounds preformance, fire away....

I have a taurus and a smith revolver. They are pretty accurate. I don't shoot them to often. .22 is much cheaper to shoot.

I have killed ALL kinds of animals with the .17 HMR, and it is devastating. I will say that around here in west Texas when the wind blows, I'd rather just have a heavier .22 lr. When it's a bit more still or the wind is steady instead of gusting, man I love the .17 HMR. A guy asked a buddy and I to do some rabbit population control on some fields, we went out and in one night killed 60 something rabbits with the .17 HMR. We were making headshots no problem at 100 yards. We were hitting them running at 150 yards, and body shots while they were still at 200 yards. That same night, we shot a fox trying to run off with one of the bodies. It entered right behind the shoulder, never exited and he didn't take 1 step. I've hit coyotes in the head and body at 85-100 yards, and had them drop where they were or run off maybe 50 yards and die. I've made a few crows blow up pretty good for that small of a bullet, and made those feathers fly. It's a damn good round and it'll do more than you think if you are careful with your distances. I've even shot a few prairie dogs with it, they flip or fall where they are; good clean kills. It doesn't have the explosive effect that the .204 or the .22-250 (which I prefer), but it's a heck of a nice small round that isn't too loud.

I have a Savage 93R17-GV with a Mueller 4-16x50mm AO scope on it, and the groundhog population around here has become pretty scarce.

I haven't got out much this year. But I did get 15 by the barn, just not with the 17. The 91/30 got em all. Its my 2nd favorite rifle behind the 7mm rem mag.

Most people confuse and compare the 17 to 22mag and even .22lr, its not, the 17 is in a class by itself, its scary accurate , so scary accurate you might not even want to shoot it much.
That little .17 cal bullet is quite devastating too .22lr doesnt compare and in terms of range none of them comes close to the .17. Its also pretty quiet too.

THe guns that are being made for it is pretty inexpensive too.

Mine is a Marlin 917v with the medium/heavy barrel and a Bushnell 3x9x40, extremely accurate out to 200yards with the Hornady ammo, i find that the Hornady ammo shoots best in all these .17 rifles, the CCI doesnt do as well , i have a few hundred rounds of the Remington but havent tried them yet.

If you want a fun ,fast, flat shooting rifle get a .17, NO its not a .22.

I have the original .17 HMR. The Ruger 77/17. A true rimfire tackdriver. It will remove most of a groundhog's head at 75 yds.

i've killed some golf balls in my day with a .17 @ 100 yrds. bricks @ 200 yrds and yes the brick did shatter. great little round, i bought 500 rnds last year on GB for 10.00 per 50 i dont think they are that cheap anymore.

Talking Re: Fans of the 17HMR lets hear some stories......

yeah its a really great gun...i have the 77/22(22 mag) with a lilja barrel and it will consistantly shoot under an inch group at 100 yards....and a really flat shooting round too....my drop is only around 3 in at 200yrds (sighted in at 100)...my farthest kill was a crow at 204 yards so dont be shy to cut one loose on a far target....
also be sure and try both the 17 grain and the 20 grain....my gun loves the 17 grain and shoots like shit with the 20's....and friend of mine, his gun is just the opposite .... but we both shoot the hornady's...good luck, im sure you'll enjoy it
