nice price, could add a rail later if ya want one. Or just some flip up irons, and/or an optic of some sort.

If your gun doesn't shoot Wolf ammo, it is broken.

I would recommend a Stag or Del-Ton M4 style with a flat top upper. $700-$800. Then get a rear flip up BUIS, 4 or 5 mags, then spend whatever's left on ammo. Shoot the piss out of it, then decide what kind of extras you want after you've gotten a little more familiar with it.
Here's mine as it is right now: ![]() Also check out www.ar15.com - anything you would ever need to know. |

I went through this same question a few years ago. My advice:
Make your first AR-15 an economical but solid build. Don't invest more than is necessary to get started for the first 6-12 months. That'll give you time to see if your lust develops into a long-term love for the rifle. Buy a quality stripped lower receiver and parts kit, assemble the lower yourself. I'll edit to add the name of a good guide book for this later. You'll need some basic tools like punch pins to do a seamless job, but in a pinch all you need is a spare AR-15 firing pin and a hammer. ![]() I like Stag Arms stripped lowers, if you can live with the deer head. Buy the upper and bolt carrier group pre-assembled. CMMG, Stag, LMT, RRA - they're all decent. Make sure it's a 16" 1/7, chambered for 5.56, and either gov't or M-4 profile. Go with the basic handguards, forget rails for now. M-4 upper with detachable carry handle is fine. Even an A2 upper receiver would be fine for now. Use iron sights for now. Once you're good with those and have determined you like the AR-15 platform, you can invest in some used optics like an Aimpoint or Eotech sight. I started this route, then also added a Colt 6920 to the collection later. I may add another this fall! I've listed a LMT upper receiver group below, though it is pricier than alternatives. I believe the resale value would be higher for the LMT due to the brand recognition and general quality. It also has the 1/7 twist, chrome-lining, 5.56mm chamber, blah blah. Stag Arms Stripped Lower Receiver: $106 STAG LOWER PARTS KIT: $69 ROCK RIVER 6 position Buttstock Assembly - black With Buffer And Spring: $75 LMT 16" M4 Carbine Upper Receiver Group: $485 BCG & Charging Handle: $130 ~$865 + tax & shipping. You'll also need mags and ammo. Only the stripped lower receiver needs to be transferred through a FFL. The rest you can have shipped to you directly. |
