Default AR-15 .22 conversion kit

I have been thinking of getting a new .22 pistol or rifle, semi-auto. Naturally the Ruger 10/22 and Mark III come to mind. But then I remember I already have a sweet little AR that I haven't been buying ammo for lately. She is neglected and I would use it much more if it was a .22lr

I stumbled on this kit and like the price and simplicity. http://www.22lrconversions.com/atch-pg.htm

Does anyone have experience or recommendations either way? The point of this change is to save money so I could use all the help I can get.

I was gonna suggest them, a friend, we'll call him, Joe Point, has this system on his rifle and loves it. Shoots it every week. I've shot it and is very handy for practice, and economical. Therefore I recomend it.

I have one, which came with the 30 round magazine for $180 or so at a Valley Forge show. You need to understand one thing about Ceiner: his rep is such that it is just about accepted fact that he will not stand behind his products. You bought it, it breaks, you buy another.

Do yourself a favor and do two things. One, get "Black Dog" magazines for it; pics are here: http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbu...ad.php?t=31798 Smoke colored ones are definitely better. Two, keep the conversion unit fanatically clean and oilier than a Lee's Hoagie Hut hoagie, and don't forget to do a thorough cleaning of the barrel, with plenty of solvent, before you put any .223 through there. All it takes is one tiny fragment of .22 LR in the way to bulge your barrel or worse.

The CMMG unit may be a better choice than the Ciener.

If you want to spend some extra bucks for a dedicated Upper check out the one at Spikes Tactical. Spikes uses a 1 in 16 twist and requires only a bit of oil on the rails.

Ceiner is gonna go nuts. That looks like a total copy of his design.

I hope he has a seizure over it. :-) At least CMMG stands behind their stuff. Plus, you get a Black Dog mag with it for the price.

There are differences. Looks line the main "slides" are waterjet cut and not round stock. Looks beefier all around.

I'm torn on what I want to do. I love the AR and feel bad that such a beautiful gun is just sitting there. At the same time i can get a new .22 rifle for about half the price.

There problem with all the conversion kits that use the AR barrel. The diameter of the 0.224 barrel is larger than the 22LR barrel and does not engrave the rifling on the lead projectile so the rifle lacks accuracy. Look for a kit that includes a barrel as well as the bolt and mag., DPMS makes one.

Tactical Solutions makes a dedicated .22 lr Upper as well, but I ordered the Spikes Tactical one.

buy the 22 rifle, take the other 1/2 the price and buy some 223 ammo. Then shoot CMP, great fun, and only 52 rounds.
