Default Who makes a good AK

I've been looking at AKs. I'm seeing all kinds on the market. Who makes a good AK. Before I get corrected, I'm not referring to the full auto AK's, but whatever you call the semi auto AK's.

Thanks,
J

There are so many different variants, and I am sure you will get a lot responses to this one. IMO, if your going to go AK, go with wood.
I have a Yugo underfold myself. Its my first, and I love it.
the AK's are very addictive, and a hell of allot of fun to shoot.
It all depends. There are Yugoslavian, Romanian, Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Czech and others that I don't know about. I only have experience with my Yugo, and they are excellent AK's if you can find them (the prices keep going up). I was also told that the AK's with the milled recievers are better than the stamped recievers. For example: Arsenal Arms has AK's with milled recievers, but they cost a fortune ($1200 & up).
I am sure there will be some experienced AK owners along soon to better fill you in and give you some good advice.
There are several guys on this forum with some beautiful AK's.
Here is my Yugoslavian Underfold:

+1 on the Yugo...I have a Yugo M70B1 (fixed wooden stock) on layaway and I can't wait to pick it up! The Yugo seems much more robust than some others that I have seen. The cream of the crop seems to be the Vectors and the Arsenals. I've also heard that Lancaster makes a great AK...but with these also comes a premium price! I got my Yugo for just under $600 out the door.

I sure like my Yugo M70B1. IMO its the best bang for the buck. While I also only have limited experience with AK's (Yugo & Romanian), I couldnt recommend the Yugo more. If you come across a good deal on one, I would recommend you buy it. They seem to be somewhat scarce nowadays. Just my $0.02

I'll 3rd a Yugo, I have 3 (2 undefolders and one fixed stock) ... all mine are Centurys and they are perfect.

I was told the reason they are scare right now is because a container of kits bound for Century has been sitting on a ship in port for 4 or 5 months and no one seems to know why they aren't being offloaded.

Actually you hit the nail right on the head.

Right now the USA is the single biggest buyer of AK's and 7.62x.39 ammo in the world. We are supplying the Iraqis with weapons and ammunition.

That is the main reason the supply is drying up.

Default Re: Who makes a good AK

My suggestion is find someone or some people that have different AKs and will let you test drive them. There are definitely some differences.

Stocks: Fixed, Underfolder, Side Folder
Caliber: 7.62 x 39, 5.45, and I think they have them in 5.56.
Furniture: Wood or Plastic

I have a Yugo fixed stock and a Vector Arms Underfolder. They are both great guns.

I would agree that the Yugos are the best bang for your buck.

Give us some more info, we might be able to help out a little more.

If you somehow make it to the Eastern Shoot on September 6, I'll let you take a look at any of my seven AKs (Saigas, Yugos, Vector, Hungarian, Norinco).

If you want to just get one, I recommend the Yugo over all others as a first inexpensive AK.
