She is i belive still in here Military configuration.. best that i can tell.. im missing a cleaning rod. and a front sight hood. but magizine screws are still there.. i dont belive shes a russian capture.. i have clear Nazi markings.. eagle with 134 near the serial of the rifle itself.. the Reciever has BCD 4 on it.. For factory and year codes Gustov werke i belive is the plant and the year is 1944 but im having a hard time matching it to the rest of itself.. i cant figure out serial wise how to match it.. i know the bolt dont match.. its a 4 number serial.. with a 5 serial barrel. the magizine floor plate is marked 236, the barrel is marked 60689. anyways this is my new toy shoots great. wish i could take some video footage of me shooting this beast.. she shoots quite nice for being how old it is

The Russians didn't obliterate the Nazi marks on the captured Mausers. At most they pinged the swastikas and sanded off the proofs on the stocks. Most captures will match barrel, receiver and stock with electro-penciling the bolt and mag plate. Usually other numbers will not match. The Germans serial numbered EVERYTHING including the small parts on the bolt. On the small parts they only used the last 2 digits.

From the pics, it looks like shellac (hopefully) or a varnish. The Russians shellac them and that's an easy fix. How is the bore? My 1st milsurp was a 98K ( that I overpaid for UGH!) and the bore is not very good but it's still damn accurate.

Cool! I love threads with C&R guns and pics! I have a K98 as well and now you have me wanting to pull it out and look up some numbers. Do you have a good website with information on what marks to look for? I'm going to go grab my K98.

Mine has a 536 on the bolt, receiver, barrel, and stock. It's dated 1940 with a 147 above the date. There also appears to be a script written lowercase "d" on it in a couple places. Mine is also missing the front sight hood and the front band has a 678. The magazine and trigger guard have etched 536 but I'm guessing the importer did that? They are not stamped.

This site says my "147" matches up with the 1940 date and indicates mine was made by J.P. Sauer. http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/unif...k/k98index.htm
I don't have numbers or stamps on nearly as many places as some of the identifications sites indicate they should be. What I do have is the "X" that signifies mine was a Russian capture.

Mauser Central is on of the better ones. link will take you to the forum, there is a sticky titled "Mauser Manufacturing Codes".

Your marked "147" is a J.P. Sauer & Son, Suhl 1938-40
