my friend,I became aware of the looks of the carcano when I saw that in history,is real sad that we have a piece in history that involves a death of one of the best presidents our nation had, thats the emoticon stands, sadness, the rifle is a nice piece and they shoot real good for what I have read, don't misunderstood my post,I like the rifle and I feel real sad that it took part in history taking down our beloved JFK,the best president we had,if you feel disturbed I apologize, but I haven't been sarcastic in no moment on the post,my sincere apologies,is a nice rifle, and part of our history in a sad point of view

Ah, OK, that's how I first read it but I read that many folks were anti-Carcano due to the JFK thing. I didn't want to make an incorrect assumption. I'm like you, I enjoy the history of the rifle and I have read that it gets a bad rap because of something reported after the assassination. I wish I could find the article but it had something to do with a reporter calling it a piece of garbage or something. It reminds me of how the media in Philly referred to the SKS after the recent murder of the police officer.

Well Mity, I snagged my first Arisaka. I'll get pics once it arrives but it is a T99, last ditch with the mum and no import marks. It's one of the nicest ones I have seen while looking so I grabbed it since I was close to completing my collection.

The numbers on the bolt and barrel all match too.

I had the chance to buy an arisaka chambered for the 6.5x50 round, but I was also told the 6.5 ammo is hard to come by. True?

NOT true. Hornady makes 6.5 Jap for about $20/box. Not bad when you consider how much "normal" calibers are going for now.

In sense of you can't find them at Walmart, yes.
And also 6.5Jap is not cheap either.
But any gunshop can get them as they are still manufactured by Norma, and someone else(My local shop has them - 6.5jap made by other then Norma. Can't remenber who it was made by). I have also told that Hornady makes 6.5, but never seen one myself

Pector55, nice! I do want to tell you few things about shooting those guns, but I got to go to work. I'll post again in morning!

2 of my local shop stock small number of them, and if your reloader, they are easy enough to reload(as far as material goes)

7.7jap is little more easier to find as well. Hornady makes them, as well as few others.
And if your reloader, you can make brass out of 30-06 brass

Edit - I wanted to tell you that some of last ditch Type 99 came with cast reciever rather then machined reciever. Those are DANGEROUS to shoot! And since all the record has been lost during the air raid, there is no information as to what seriese made in what arsonal came with cast reciever.
Looking at your pic, it is last ditch(you can tell by the omittion of:

             九九式

under the mum. But judging by the bolt handle(non prum shaped handle with sharp edged safety knob, but smoothed out), and non adjustable peep sight, lack of upper foreguard and nailed wooden butt plate, I say yours are some of the early Type 99 substute(prolly mid 1944 manufactured), and not true last ditch. and prolly perfectly good to shoot.

true last ditch - manufactured around early to mid 1945 - and some hard to find version called "navy special" are horrendusly made.
rough weld, sharp edge, poor material, missing cleaning rod, sling attatchment, and issued with rope instead of canvas sling. Those are something you should think X2 about shooting.
Just look at the pic(early August 1945 manufactured. War ended Aug 16 1945)....

You said number match. Did you check all the numbers inside of bolts, lower recievers? Being great shape, and if all the number match, it may be a good keeper!

Yes, I have pictures showing that the numbers inside the bolt all match as well.

Thanks for the information on the safety. I will investigate it further to be safe. That rope sling is something else. LOL Hopefully mine is a good one. FYI.. www.ammodirect.com has 7.7 Jap.
