Both of them are about as good as you can get in the way of options. Just because there isn't a TAPCO alternative doesn't mean that it isn't viable. Remember one thing about these Yugos: they're built on receivers a time and a half thicker than the stamped standard for AKs, almost always with new barrels. They're inherently more accurate because of the construction. Fault them all you want for not offering more reasonable solutions, but they work, and work well.

IMHO (i have 8 underfolders of various origins in a total of 17 AK rifles), the chinese stamped guns are a close tie to the polish, the romanian md63 is not far behind them, and the Yugo is a slightly different creature. then we get to the sidefolders...chinese is tops, followed by bulgarian, and the hungarian in a distant 3rd. the VZ58 sidefolder is nicer than any of the AK sidefolders, but is not an AK.

You can get Wood for a Yugo from Ironwood Designs ... A little high in price but from what I've seen ... It's worth it.

Make sure you are comfortable with the underfolder feel (cheek weld, etc). You can get a rubber pad for added comfort:

I too am interested in getting an AK, however I don't want to spend alot of dough. I was looking a the Black Widow AK. It is not very traditional looking, it is more a newer tactical style if you ask me. Any good?

Not positive that I know what a Black Widow is ... but I believe that it's just a Romanian AK with black furniture on it. If so, the quality should be the same as any other Romanian ... btw some of the Romanian are not screwed like you read about all the time. Some are/were put together very well. Just depends.

Folding stocks can be padded to an extent with paracord without interfering with their function. The padding isn't so much for pure comfort as it is to avoid putting one's face against metal in temperature extremes of summer and winter. I've also heard tell of people putting automotive and plumbing supplies to good use, such as fuel line and pipe wraps.

What the hell is a "Black Widow" AK?

Get a Saiga and do the conversion. That's the best deal out there right now. That way, you can pick the caliber and style of the AK you will be putting together. I have two Saigas and love them both.

If you want to get a good and cheap, AK, get a Romanian WASR. If you can afford a little more for something MUCH better, get a Yugo. And again, if you have an extra $100 - $200, get a Vector.

Of my AKs, and I have seven, my favorites are my two Saigas, then the Vector underfolder, closely followed by the two Yugos (fixed wood stock and RPK), then the Hungarian, then the Chinese.

Some are better than others, but for the most, any AK will run nicely.
