the rommies really are not that bad.
the yugo with the wood stock have some funky geometery to them. the comb on teh stock is pretty high.
i find that it's almost hard to look through the rear sight. it's like i can't get low enough on it.
but they look nice i guess.

Yeah my wife has the same problem with our fixed stock one, she likes the underfolders better ... I don't seem to have that problem though. I was talking more about how well they are made as opposed to that.

understood.
but it's a mute point if the shooter finds the gun uncomfortable to use.
the build quality is high, but it rarely leaves teh house.

True, but in my case I don't mind the stock so its a matter of personal preference ... anyone buying a Yugo fixed stock should try it out like anything else and see if the stock bothers them.

Even still, a stock is cheap. You can get almost any of the standard stuff for <$100. So if the overall build quality is higher. I'd go with that - and just change what I didn't like.

The opposite is also true, going with a cheaper gun if you plan on making ALOT of changes. Since you will be replacing most of the stuff anyway, its better to keep your initial cost down. Something I just didn't do very well.

Bought a Romak, paid Bulgie money. And am replacing half of it.

Ehh you live and learn, I was lucky enough to find a dealer (thanks Bill) that took the time to explain the difference to me at a show and let me do a side by side comparison before I bought my first one ... I will be indebted to that dealer for a LONG time. I have bought another $1500 worth of weapons from this guy just because he took the time to really explain things to me instead of just wanting the quick sell and then move on to the next sucker..... not something you find everyday!

Not stupid, especially if you keep it a while. Paying a high price for a gun stings at first, but amortizes down very low over 5-10 years. Plus, most guns rise in price even of used. I questioned my sanity after buying several guns, I think I lost money (about $100) on just one. All the others appreciated in value.

What?

Ultimak makes a Yugo-fitting fore-end replacement, Ace stocks can be retrofitted with a replacement internal receiver block, PD Distributing does side-mounts and optics, on-barrel options also exist for lighting systems and lasers, various manufacturers make replacement front sight assemblies for AKs, and there are several options for basic to fancy replacement flash hiders and muzzle brakes for the slan brake that typically comes installed.

Did I mention the single-point and three-point sling options that you can get, too?

I appreciate the feel good post but I really could have done better I think. I'm not beating myself up too bad. I love the rifle. And I do plan on hanging on to it for a while and actually caring for it well, as I do all my things. Mainly because it fills my AK slot. Now I just have to fill a few more slots...

Which is where doing a little better on the AK would have spread those funds around a little more to dump into something else. Or maybe covered some of the toys I bought for the AK. lol!
