I picked up my first mosin nagant this weekend at the Valley Forge gun show. I have a few quick questions for those of you that are familiar with them.
1. I checked the protrusion of the firing pin with the gauge that was supplied with the rifle as per the instructions here. On the deeper of the two notches (the one that reads 95) there is no light between the gauge and the pin, meaning that it is a close fit, however the gauge does not rock back and forth on the pin at all like it does on the shallower notch (the one that reads 75). Will this be ok? Because if I back the pin out further it will no longer be flush with the cocking knob. 2. My Mosin has brass furniture. Is this rare at all? Pic below. ![]() thanks |

That's a beauty! The Brass furniture isn't something I recall on my 91/30 or my M44, but they're both back in Texas, so unfortunately I can't run back and check, but I think you may have gotten a pre-war Nagant.
http://7.62x54r.net/ has a good guide to finding out more about your Mosin. Happy shooting, Kirk |

Ok, from that we know that it was made at the Izhevsk arsenal, which is a good start. Is it a 91/30, as I'm assuming it is?

It is an M44 |

If it's an M44...with brass furniture, that is a little weird. It *might* be one of the 1943 versions, but I can't say for certain. Might be a good idea to take it to an expert and find out, though.
Either way, M44's are great. I'm in the process of turning mine into a scout-style rifle, and love the little thing. |

It could also just be an M44 that someone took a fair amount of time and effort to clean up before selling it to you, though.

Hey Sling,
Congrats, Cheap Rifles that are alot of fun. I can't help much other than to add I have a 91/30 Sniper with a Repro PU Scope that has the Brass furniture, It is a nice constrast but I'm not sure what it means. Rest asured someone will come along with the answer. The Whole Firing pin thing I never worried about, I screw it in as snug as can be and then back it out so that it lines up with the witness marks on the cocking knob, Then check the fired brass for anything unusual and that's that, Never had a problem yet. Good Luck and Have Fun TJ

The "95" and "75" indicate 0.95mm and 0.75mm. The firing pin must protrude 0.85mm +/- 0.1mm. If it "rocks" on 95, you need to shorten it. If it doesn't "rock" on 75, lengthen it a little. To lengthen use the bolt guide fork as a wrench, and turn the firing pin by the flats. Lacka so: ![]() Click on image to view original document. More: http://tinyurl.com/46uxwk
