Slingshot you have your basic M44. The brass caps on a M44 are not usual but not collectable either. The Russians "recycled" parts during refurbs so these most likely came from an older rifle. Just remember the M44s were designed to shoot with the bayo extended.

Welcome to the sickness!

I searched around about the brass, sounds like it is nothing super rare, but it should look pretty sweet when I polish it up. I Can't wait to get some black and blue marks on my shoulder!

Black and blue, bah....nothing like that. When you bruise it that badly, it turns purple!

It's fun though....just don't make my mistake and let your mother shoot it.

I read something interesting on the M44 and M38 Mosins. Supposedly, the stock is fairly short due to these being used in the harsh winter conditions in Russia. When you are wearing the heavy coats to protect you from the weather, you need the stock a little shorter and that kick won't bother you. I thought that was pretty interesting. It also explains the cool sensation of shooting it while wearing a T-shirt.

Ya it is a good idea to make sure it is in tight against your shoulder lol If not, you will know about it.

Ohh in case you have not shot it yet, when you go to the range for the first time, take some paper towels or a half a cleaning rod or something you can clean out the chamber with.
Mosin Nagants are known for sticky bolt syndrome where the cosmoline that is left in the chamber congels with the lacquer off the shells and forms almost like a glue when it gets hot. My 91/30 damn near needed a 2x4 to get the bolt unstuck when i first shot it.
Once the gun is warmed up and the bolt is sticking, pull the bolt out and get in there and wipe the gunk out of the chamber either with a papertowel or the piece of the cleaning rod. Do that a couple times and it will clear it up nicely

I wish I'd thought of that when I first got my M44...

Instead, I kept shooting it and eventually tilted it downward, and had a nice stream of cosmoline and olga's toenails out of the muzzle.

Still getting crap about it from my friend, who took the time to say "In mother Russia, Rifle tells YOU when to pee."

LOL, I found some very good bolt disassembly vids on YouTube when I got my M44. I never had the bolt stick on me but I tore the bolt apart and soaked each piece in kerosene to help take the cosmoline off. I am a fan of the Mosins. I have a 91/30, a 91/30 hex on the way, and I ordered an M38 but got a call yesterday that they were sold out.

Also, aimsurplus still has the 250rd cans for $40. I just ordered my 3rd and I'll probably keep picking up a couple more each month until they are out. 1000rds of 7.62x54R goes much further than my 7.62x39 or 5.56. I shoot each weekend so in order to conserve ammo, I'm switching over to my Mosins to save mone. LOL

I had actually placed an order for an M38, a 91/30 with hex receiver, and a Nagant pistol from Southerohiogun.com. They e-mailed me to inform me that they were out of M38's. I just saw that jgsales.com has M38's for $99. I can't get one now. I just spent my budget on ammo.

Hey sling;

You'll love the weapon. Its a good shooter, and I have owned a few over the years. I sold all mine and now only own a 91/30, but the M44's are great shooters, very satble platform from which to build a long range shooter with. Making a scout style shooter is not something I have done but it is on my short list of "to do's " for my collection.

Have fun and stay safe.

Bear.
