Sometimes it's not quite that simple.
My DSA STG-58 is stamped .308 Winchester on the reciever. But I remember calling DSA once for some technical advice about a part I was buying, and they told me that they do their testing with Portugese FNM 7.62x51 surplus. And since it's a surplus barrel, it had to have been chambered for 7.62 to begin with and not .308.
But it doesn't seem to me that DSA would stay in business very long if they were recommending that their customers do something that would cause them harm.
One thing I do though is to limit my bullets to 147-168 grain weights. Most military style rifles just weren't designed to deal with bullets that are any heavier than that. I also would never use any kind of a light magnum type load in any military style rifle and I keep my handloads in the lower mid range of .308 data - it's safer and allows me to use the same zero and gas setting.
