Well I like the 338-378 weatherby. It has killed elk at 1000 yards (as has the 30-378). Both were witnessed by a friend of mine. In comparison to the 35 Whelen (named for Col. Whelen btw), both weatherbys are faster, flatter and more deadly to paraphrase Roy Weatherby. Now if you are limiting your hunting to deer then yes the 35 Whelen would be a very good choice. I just no longer hunt in the woods of Pennsylvania.

I am a huge fan of milsurp hunting and I suggest the following guns/calibers:
K31 Swiss - 7.5x55mm Swede Mauser - 6.5x55mm Both are incredibly powerful and accurate guns. The Swede Mauser round has one of the flattest trajectories of any rifle I have ever had the pleasure of shooting.

Where I live, Berks County, I'd say a Marlin lever action .30-30 or .35.
Tried and true, handy, fast,IMO the best woods rifle for this area. mark |

Actually if I were limited to a single rifle for the whitetail, it would be my 240 weatherby. Beautiful rifle if ever there was such a thing.

I bought a Browning leaver action in .358 Winchester when they first came out. Never had a second thought about it. It still gets the nod when I'm in heavy brush or kickin out gullies. It can reach out far enough to cross most fields when necessary. I could never understand why the .358 didn't catch on with more hunters?

+2 from me. Shot my first deer with my grandfather's 99 when I was 12.
Good times. RIP Bob Sanders. |

I hunt with a few rifles , Remington 7600 in 308 , K98 in 8mm , and a Savage 99 in 250-3000 . I like all of them but I am thinking of sticking with the smaller caliber.
