Default Casull out of a rifle - is it a good idea?

I have been toying with the idea of picking up a Puma model 92 in .454 Casull. it would, as I have recently learned here and by further study, also accept .45LC cartridges. They could be fun for target shooting and small game while I venture to say that Casull could handle almost anything North America has to offer.

So my question is, why hasn't this combination caught on? These guns are EXTREMELY hard to find. They look fine and are certainly cheap enough. Is there a quality problem, supply problem, operational problem (excessive recoil, etc.) or am I just deluded that it is a great combo?

Thanks!

I like the idea too, so you are not alone. I almost bought one, but ended up getting the Marlin Cowboy model in .45 Colt instead. I just liked the Marlin more, and with hot .45 Colt loads, it can do just about anything a .454 can. The Marlin has crappy sights and a heavy trigger, but those can be easily remedied. One of my friends has the Puma in .45 Colt and he likes it a lot. No problems that I know of.

I can't see how recoil would be a problem, even with .454 rounds. I'm guessing it really didn't catch on because of all the .45 Colt lever guns out there. With a hot .45 Colt load and the extra velocity from the barrel length, it can take just about anything at close range.

I think part of the reason it didn't catch on is price...those Pumas in 454 are on the salty side. If I found one for a decent buck I would surely buy it, escpecially a 16" or so Carbine. I think it would make an awesome Deer/Bear gun.
