Hi Guys,
Rather than buy a new rifle , i am thinking about adding a new AR 15 upper to my collection in the "new" 6.8 spc round, i like the ballistics (on paper of course) of the 6.8 spc, seemed like a nice all around cartridge.my question is this if i go that route will i have to get new Magazines in 6.8 ? or will my AR 15 223, 5.56 Mags work. I guess my question is will the 6.8 requires new mags? Thanks, Nyman |

Yes, if you want maximum reliability.

from what I read you can use the 5.56 mags but you need to change the followers out and possibly bend the feed lips a tad. So if you have a ton of mags already you could save money by just converting a few.
If you're thinking about going that route I would suggest checking out the 6.5 Grendal round also. It looked on paper to have an edge on the 6.8 from what I remember.

Thanks Guys,
Yes reliability is important to me, So new mags would be required? The upper that i'm considering the manufacturer does not supply mags with upper , so i might skip that idea. I have never heard of the 6.5 grendel so i will have to research that too. Will i need new mags with the Grendel also? Thanks, Nyman |

Yes the 6.5 would need different mags as well. The only reason I mentioned the 6.5 is because according to the ballistics info I looked at it was a much better split between the 5.56 and the .308 than the 6.8 with better long range performance.
Originally I was interested in the 6.8 too. But when I saw the info on the 6.5 I thought it would be the better way to go. Although I still have not made the jump because of ammo costs. both the 6.8 and 6.5 are fairly expensive.

Thanks, Sluggie 24.
The ammo cost probably wouldnt bother me much, i wouldnt shoot it a lot, just something different than the usual .223/5.56. Nyman |

I just wanted to post up some reading for you guys. This is a link where I got to talking about the .260 vs. the .308 in an AR platform. I DO understand that the .308 is not an option since you do not want to buy a complete rifle, but I did want you to see just some of the discussion that went on about the .260, 6.8 and 6.5 Grendel. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look up the ballistics and compare things the way that I do in some of these posts. Don't take just everybody's word on how cool and hot rod these calibers are, because they're not necessarily the best thing since sliced bread. These calibers have their place, just know their limitations and what you're getting yourself into. http://www.pafoa.org/forum/rifles-42...-a-page-2.html Also here is a discussion on XDtalk, sorry for cross posting to other forums, but it does have some good info about the 6.5 Grendel. Here's that link http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/ar-talk...endations.html
Also realize that if you go with the 6.8 spc and you handload, you'll be really really limited in what brass and bullets that you buy. The 6.5 has a few more choices in bullets and what not, but you'll still have to fireform all your brass if you are reloading. Just some things that you should think about before you just jump right into some of these. Hope this isn't too far off topic, I just want you to know some of the facts. Great idea Tomcat088!
mrnyman.....check out the ballistics charts on page one of the first link he posted. Shows all the calibers we were talking about. The 6.5 does have a good edge on both the 5.56 and the 6.8.....

Thanks guys, now having read that, does anybody offer the .243 in a AR15 platform? The .243 seem to make a lot of sense ballistically.
I really want a light compact Gun, i have a L1A1 that i call my big Gun. . If the Army adopts the 6.8 i believe things will change drastically for this round in terms of availability . Thanks, Nyman |
