Best, most "classic" current production .30-06

So I'm thinking I want to add to my wish list a hunting rifle in .30-06. I would want to buy new but value products that have been in production for a while with established "heritage" if you will. I'm not all that knowledgeable in this area so would welcome some suggestions...make/model. Thoughts?

How much do you want to spend? What type - Bolt, pump, semi auto, single shot? Stock - wood, laminate, synthetic? High end, low end (cost, stock material, barrel, etc)? All the major manufactures make 06's and can run the gamit from no frills, value priced to every frill, premium price.

One example, Savage has been in the gun making business for a long time. Their bolt actions with the accutrigger are very nice, good shooters and priced very good. Jump to a Remington 700 ADL and you get some real nice wood, nice metal, good reputation, long heritage, and a higher price. Get a Sako 75, very nice gun, great reputation, even higher price.

You need to list everything you want , then go to their web sites and see who meets the majority of your criteria.

Ok...thanks for the clarifying criteria. Not sure I have all the answers but here's my thinking at the moment...

Budget - would like to keep it around $1,000
Type - I'm thinking bolt would be the way to go.
Stock - I'm partial to a nice wood stock.

Don't want bargain basement...prefer something with good value so forget the froo froo frilly ultra high $$$ sort of stuff.

There are still some new Winchester 70's to be had. Fits all your criteria, and talk about heritage. A few months ago www.reedssports.com had a few in stock. Production ended in 2006, but look hard and you'll probably find one in a store. Also check www.gunbroker.com and www.gunsamerica.com, they have 70's pop up once in a while that were purchased, but never fired. The last time I looked they were going anywhere from $100-$250 over MSRP, but if it's what you want get it now, the prices will only be going up.

Oh yeah, it's got the whole ooh aah thing going for it too. It will definitely get noticed in any crowd. Maybe not a rifle experts first choice, but definitely on the short list of any gun lover.

My first choice would be a 70 either a Featherweight or a Super Grade. The Kimber 8400 is a sharp looking unit, but I don't know much about them, including price.

Well, I'm going to wait and cross my fingers on these. It's great that they are coming back, but I am not happy about the trigger being changed.

They better not bring back the 94 too, I just paid way too much for one, and I'd like to pretend it was a good investment for at least a year or two. I guess I can always say, it's a pre-2008 and someone will think that adds to the value.

I'd definitely wait for the re-issue of the M70.

My first pick would be a Model 70 of the pre-1964 vintage.
Problem is, the rifles bring a premium price and they ain't that easy to find.
I own five in various calibers, the oldest , a Pre- War version made in 1938.
Model 70's are really fine rifles and the pre-64's are actually a good investment.
