I think that there were several categories in which they based their ratings. The M14, despite being a great weapon, may have been hurt because of it's limited service life.

That is very true, one of the things that they rate on in that show is service life.

Personally, I wouldn't have included the 1903 at all, it was basically the US version of the Mauser 98.
My top 3 would have been. 1. AK-47 2. FN-FAL 3. M-16 Based on Countries adopted, service length, production and combat effectiveness. My .02 on the matter.

I kinda take the top ten things on tv with a grain of salt. Were some of them seem to be more accurate than others I keep in mind it also has to appeal to the masses to get through screening. The military channel does better than most with the top ten.

I agree and I love the '03. The AUG is a bit suspect as well but I guess as far as innovation it deserves some mention. Maybe they could do submachine guns next? |

I know the FAL was used by both the British and the Argentinians -sp? during their fight over the Falklands but where else was it used in combat? I saw a History channel special on the Falklands and apparently the Brits were using the FAL in semi-auto and Argentina had a full auto version. On the top 10 show, they reported that the round was difficult to control in full auto.

![]() Next to the AK, the FAL and variants was probably the most adopted and had the most countries making them at one time. Except maybe the Mauser at the turn of the century. Falklands, South Africa, Vietnam, Rhodesian Bush War, Gulf War, Six-day War, Chechen Wars, Balkan Wars....all over South America and Africa. Easiest thing to do is check out Wiki, they have a decent history on the FAL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_FAL
