I bought my No4MkI from AIM and it turned out quite well. It took alot of cleaning as the cosmo, etc was really caked on. I've shot it a little bit (too busy shooting Garands, Mausers, etc) but I'm happy with it.

Ishapore Enfield in .308. No smith scope mount zeroed to 300 yds. Very heavy; very accurate, very cheap rifle.

Thumbs up Re: Enfield Experts wanted

Back when I was 15, I purchased a MK III enfield. It's a very fine rifle; well balanced, accurate and very good looking if you ask me. At the show where I purchased it though, i was looking for the MK IV because of the better peep sights. I've also heard the jungle carbine MK V isnt terribly accurate and kicks like a bull. Go with the MK IV 1st and the MK III 2nd

I have 2, both bought locally. I got first, a sporterized N. 4 Mk1 at the Army Navy in Whitehall. I got a Gibbs reworked Ishapore up at Boyers in Slatington. I haven't shot the Ishapore as much as i would've liked, bought it at the end of last year and after one session of function checking I had to repair the forestock (nothing wrong, just a loosened former repair - epoxy fixes everything). But to khanfam's point, it's heavy, can't imagine it with the long sword bayonet mounted. Also kicked pretty stoutly with the SA surplus I was using.

The N. 4 however, is my favorite rifle. Action smooth as butter, very fast. 30 aimed shots a minute from a bolt action? Yeah, it's very possible. Get one with the flip ring/adjustable peep sights if you can, they're the finest iron sights ever put on a battle rifle IMO. I can hit a tennis ball offhand at 75-80 yards with the ring, with the peeps I can hit it if I can see it. The .303 is harder to find, but not that difficult, Cabelas carries S&B pretty cheap. It's just a beautiful weapon

I think they're one of the coolest guns around, and defiantly leave you with a good impression of what perservirence is. "Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun."

AIM's 2a
These are pretty coo, and are seen in movies a lot from when the british somewhat occupied the desertity areas, like the movie the Mummy, but the bad thing is they're work to get clean. I've had mine for two whole months, and still don't have all the the old paint off it yet.

Have you checked the 303 surplus ammo market? That's the main reason I sold a pristine (unfired?) 1943 dated No4 Mk1. I just couldn't feed it all the time without resorting to more expensive commercial loads. Ditto with my 1918 No1 MkIII...the core of the problem is 303 dropped out of standard issue sometime in the 1950s. 7.62x54R is the opposite. Decent surplus everywhere and still in use.

There are a lot of No5 fakes, do your homework before investing. I recall Navy Arms flooded the market with fake No5s years ago, they were really shortened No4 rifles fitted with surplus flash hiders. They lacked the lightening cuts, so they were easy to spot. And the real No5 rifles had a wandering zero problem, from what I read. Ran into this a few days ago, it's a good starting point.

I bought an Ishapore 2A (Indian copy of the No1 MkIII in 7.62x51) as a cheap 308 platform, it's a real winner. Cheap ammo, reliable and more accurate than I expected.
