Wrong? I dunno.
Creepy? A little.

There was one in my local shop for $450.
I can't recall if it was a Russian or a Romanian though.

I don't know if I had mentioned it to you, or if it even matters, but the Yugos are a bit heavier. I like the balance/feel of the other makes a little better than my Yugo.

I got one, it is a Russian Tula 54r. NEVER had any problem with it. I would trust it more than my HK91, imagine that..he he heh

BTW, if you plan to buy it, look at the charging handle to see if it is chrome or black. A black bolt indicates a re-arsenal SKS, not that it makes any difference but for collectors, they want the shiny original one, he he hehh.......in any case, it is an excellent choice.

That's what made me want one.

Picked up a 1950 Tula and loved it! If it's original it's well worth that price. A rearsenal is still worth that kind of cash so I would go for it. Nice, quality rifles. Did you ever shoot mine last time?

EM's SKS has a way of doing that. I came real close to buying one (Yugo) last month. But talked myself out of it and bought reloading equipment instead.

Oh, and Joe Smith's Russian doesn't help either.

My next fire arm purchase is going to be an SKS. I'd like to find a Yugo or Russian make rather than Chinese. I figure I'll give a call down to Seneca Arms tomorrow afternoon and see what he has in stock, check prices and all that fun stuff. I want to make this rifle my 'project' rifle- put on a lot of modifications. Although I'd have to check the legality of what I want to do before I do it. I certainly don't want a SWAT team kicking down my door and shooting my dog!

Edit: Please forgive my ignorance before reading my next question. Are there any SKS models that do not have an internal magazine? Like, would I be able to purchase a magazine and load the rifle like an AK? Thanks in advance.

Yes, any AK-47 variant would do.

I can't find my "SKS required reading" article right now...
I can't understand why anyone wants to make an SKS "like" an AK.
BUY an AK if that's what you want.

OK. End of my "short rant"!

The answer to your question is NO, they all have internal magazines, but you CAN buy detachable mags and set it up to accept them. Short version: Most are crap, and unreliable.(feed problems)
The most positive things I've heard were regarding the Tapco brand 20 rd mags.

If you want to learn more, go here: http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php

and there is a LOT of good info here:

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the info. There are two reasons I'd rather buy an SKS and mod it rather than an AK-- 1) I need something to take up my time and if I make this firearm a 'project' weapon, it will take up time. 2) My friend has an AK and I don't want to get something he already has. Generally, my friend and I go to the range together. If we both have the same weapon, it takes out some of the fun of shooting.

So far, these are the mods I want to purchase:

(Just opinions)
  • Strap seems fine.
  • The stock is a decent choice. GRoPA has one on his SKS and I liked it allot.
  • I'd stick with the 20 round magazines as they tend to be more reliable.
  • The tri-rail and other dust cover mounts work well for accessories except not the most stable for a scoped setup. I'm not saying no, but soviet military rifles do not take well to anything except the standard iron sights. Most attempts at adding optics later just don't seem "right"
  • No experience with the muzzle break.
