I also have a new P38. I read this thread prior to shooting my gun for the first time. After seeing what happened to you, I followed the steps you laid out to see if it would happen to me, making damn sure that the barrel was pointed downrange at the backstop. I'm happy to say that it did not happen to me, and she functioned completely correctly, and accurately! I was pretty surprised at how accurate the P38 was. I love this pistol!

Thanks, I'm glad to see the results from another P38 newbie. I finally tore mine down tonight and lo and behold, found a big ole chunk of cleaning patch stuck down near the safety catch. The next time I go shooting I'll take extra precautions in case this wasn't the cause of the AD, but a few dry fire tests show the problem may be solved.
