the safety has to be on to get the trigger group back in.
I forget which, but try it both ways. cock hammer, put safety on, and push firmly to get the latch to engage. heres an assembly guide: http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/carbine/index.asp

Thanks for the replies. That assembly guide from The SKS boards is the one that I am following. It says a"firm push" but thats not working for me.

A "firm push" would be an understatement for my SKS. It was hard to get out and hard to put back in.

Make sure the safety is on.
For my more stubborn SKS's, I'll put them on the floor (carpeted or otherwise padded) and use my foot to snap them in. Vince

Flip it upside down and lean(if fails step on it, as already suggested) on the trigger guard. remove the bolt carrier, spring, and receiver cover.(gun is much more stable) some take some force to snap back on. also check to make sure your magazine is properly seated.

Standing on the stock can damage the rifle. I use a 4" C-clamp; set it in place; and, then, simply screw the clamp down until the trigger group snaps back in place.

Thank for all the advice. Got it all locked down with the help of a mallets. I have been told that it's supposed to get easier with time.
