Default probably a stupid question...

im sorry for this question, ive been reading several of the posts, and what i get from it is:
1. you have to be 21 to buy a handgun,
2. you can transport it as long as its unloaded and the ammo is in a different part of the car,
3. the first 2 is allowed without a permit of any kind,
and 4. you can walk down the street with a loaded side arm on your hip also without a permit.(other than a first class city)
is this correct,
im getting my permit to carry concealed, but was just wondering if i understand the laws as i read them here

1. Yes.
2. Only the exceptions listed in the NFA, such as going to the range or a gunsmith, unless you have a LTCF, in which case you don't have to have your sidearm unloaded.
3. If you substitute my #2, yes.
4. Yes.

Legal age to purchase a handgun from a FFL is 21, however the legal age to own a handgun is 18. You may purchase from a private owner, but the transfer has to be doen by a sheriff. From what I have read, not many sheriffs will do this. You can receive a handgun as a gift from a parent or grandparent without the need for a transfer of any kind.

The specific exceptions for when you are allowed to carry an unloaded firearm in your vehicle without a license to carry a firearm are found in 18 Pa.C.S. § 6106(b). I have listed the specific exceptions of interest to regular citizens, since part of the actual statute is really difficult to read.
  • Any persons engaged in target shooting with a firearm, if such persons are at or are going to or from their places of assembly or target practice and if, while going to or from their places of assembly or target practice, the firearm is not loaded.
  • From the place of purchase to his home or place of business
  • To a place of repair, sale or appraisal or back to his home or place of business
  • In moving from one place of abode or business to another
  • From his home to a vacation or recreational home or dwelling or back
  • To recover stolen property under section 6111.1(b)(4) (relating to Pennsylvania State Police)
  • To a place of instruction intended to teach the safe handling, use or maintenance of firearms or back
  • To a location to which the person has been directed to relinquish firearms under 23 Pa.C.S. § 6108 (relating to relief) or back upon return of the relinquished firearm
  • To a licensed dealer's place of business for relinquishment pursuant to 23 Pa.C.S § 6108.2 (relating to relinquishment for consignment sale, lawful transfer or safekeeping) or back upon return of the relinquished firearm
  • To a location for safekeeping pursuant to 23 Pa.C.S. § 6108.3 (relating to relinquishment to third party for safekeeping) or back upon return of the relinquished firearm.
  • Persons licensed to hunt, take furbearers or fish in this Commonwealth, if such persons are actually hunting, taking furbearers or fishing as permitted by such license, or are going to the places where they desire to hunt, take furbearers or fish or returning from such places. (Requires sportsman’s firearm permit.)
  • Persons training dogs, if such persons are actually training dogs during the regular training season. (Requires sportsman’s firearm permit.)

If you want to check out the actual statute, I have included it below.
18 Pa.C.S.A. § 6106
Title 18 Pa.C.S. Crimes and Offenses
