A long time ago, I picked up a 4" revolver. While at an indoor shooting range, I overheard people saying something like, short barrels are useless on revolvers. No accuracy, side of the barn, etc, etc. So for years, I have to say I've had a stigma against short barrels. Which is fine, since I only bought semi's after that for myself.
Well almost 2 decades later, I just picked up a Taurus 850 UL, 38 spl, figured small enough for the Wifey to carry. I took it out the range today to test it out, even with very limited time, I am impressed with what I saw. Lacking real targets, remember I said very limited time, I found page mark post-its(about an 1" wide by 3"). Put one up, and at 3 meters the first five shots I put two dead on. At the end of getting use to the trigger, I was punching holes 4 quickly with each reload. 4 shots and the paper was shredded, so 5th was pointless. I used walmart Remington umc 125 gr 38 spl +p rounds, and amazed how well it shot meeting my desires for a personal defense revolver for the Wifey. Tom <reformed snub nose snob>

Three of us after about 200 rds. could from a rest put 3 to 5 rds. in a full man size target at 100 yds. The snubs sight radius takes a little getting used to but the guns are fairly consistent.

Not to deaden your thunder at all, but it doesnt matter a lick how well you can shoot that Taurus.
How does she do?

your 4" revolver is still a 1/2" longer than my 3.5" .45acp auto . . . . LOL
just sayin! It's all about how you shoot, not the size of your weapon . . . so she says now get the wifey out to shoot as well, but never take her to pick up a new gun . . . it costs you too much

Although a snub nose was made to be a short range, concealable weapon, that doesn't mean that objects can't be hit at longer ranges. It just take practice, practice, and more practice to become proficient. When I am coaching someone who is new to snubbies I start them out at 3 to 5 yds, max. Once they are getting good groups in center body mass I take them out to a whooping 7 yds and start again. Then 10 yds and finally 15 yds. I do not take them out further than that because now you're looking at the "if Mr.X was 50 feet from you, why did you shoot him when you could have left the scene" type questions. However, if they want to shoot it at longer ranges I will help them figure out their sight alignment and tell them to practice, practice, practice.

My 4-inch 625 is easily one of the most accurate handguns I've ever shot, so this is no surprise. My 4-inch 686 is a tack driver too. Welcome to the world of "short" barreled wheelies. Glad you had a good experience.

i'm curious what is considered a "snub nose"?
i would not have considered a 4" revolver to be a "snub-nose". i would have considered that to be a medium-sized revolver. when i think of snub nose, i think of barrels 2" or less. of course, i'm very, very far from a revolver expert (as revolvers and my hands go together like oil and water), so i'm curious to hear what those of you who are actually into revolvers consider to be a "snub nose"? |
