Default Taurus .45 safety question

I have just purchased a Taurus PT1911, love the gun. It is my first "Colt style" weapon so I am not familiar with some of the quirks yet, but I had a question:

The method of carry for the gun is "cocked & locked". IE, hammer back, safety engaged. On several occasions I think I have noticed the safety *NOT* engaged when I pull it from the holster. (Galco leather). Is it possible the gun is not locking the safety in place, or am I doing something wrong? can the safety be disengaged while the gun is in the holster? I don't think I am fat fingering it when I draw, but I can't sweat to that.

Advice?

First, the #1 safety for a firearm is you. So keeping your finger off the trigger till ready to shoot is important. Good job.

Second, is your holster rubbing against the safety on extraction? I have a colt government, not a Taurus, so guessing from how the safety is setup.

My safety is snug as a bug...it takes some actual effort to disengage it.

When you don't use the holster - do you have any problems.. Does the safety "click" into place?

The thumb safety on all my 1911`s kind of clicks on and snap off. Besides you still have the grip safety.

The thumb safety should have a good solid click when you put it on or take it off. Is the safety lever on the Taurus an oversized lever? Ambidextrous?Possiblily hitting something on the holster or your hand?
The Taurus comes with a lot of bells and whistles. I have never found a reason to have oversized levers or switches on my 1911's. I like Taurus's (Tauri?) BTW.
Is the holster a thumbsnap? If so, when you snap the strap snap closed are you pushing on the safety lever?
Galco is normally good stuff.
If the safety does not click solidly into place consider having it checked.

I've found that not all holsters like the added width of ambi safeties such as the one on the Taurus. It seems the sides of the holster can push off the thumb safety. Thumb breaks can interfere as well, I avoid them on a holster carrying cocked and locked.

I have a Smith and Wesson 1911 with a Galco leather holster with a thumbsnap. I noticed sometimes when I snap it down the safety will come off. Its because the snap is right at the safety lever. I just snap it and recheck that the safety is still on. With the leather strip between the cocked hammer it is still very save even if the safety is off. I actually feel better carrying a cocked and locked 1911 than a DA only striker fired pistol. For some reason I like to see a visible hammer. I had never had the safety disengauge once it is set in the holster. But the SW1911 only has one safety lever.

I heard good and bad about the Taurus 1911. I have a PT145 that is a great shooter and very compact but I didn't want to chance a 1911 with Taurus. Let me know how you like it.

I've only had the safety disengage once on my PT1911, but i think I brushed up against something and flipped it off. Just a word of caution, are you aware of the safety issues with some of the PT1911's? I was unfortunate enough to get one with a faulty safety. After less than 50 rounds, it actually fell out of the gun. I ordered a new one from Fusion Firearms, and have not had any problems since. It took a little bit of fitting, but not anything major. With the factory safety, after just one magazine, the safety would start working it's way out. With the new safety, the Pt1911 is my favorite gun to shoot.
