Default What do you think of my new rear sight?

Or lack thereof.

The rear sight that came with my gun was total crap. It was plastic, and it was never really secure. Not only that it was really hard to line up with the front sight.

Well today I got fed up and took the damn thing off. The angle of my slide is such that it lines up perfectly with the front post and without the rear sights in the way I can get that dot on target super fast. If I take my time and aim slowly the accuracy is the same, but with increased speed when it counts. I taped off a neat square on the rear of the slide and painted it gold. It allows me to get on target fast, and I can center the front sight in the square for precise shooting. It is just as accurate as the rear sight was.

What do you guys think? It works for me. Keep in mind this gun was never a tack driver. It always goes bang and works from "here to there" so it's main purpose is a short range fighting gun. For that this new sighting system seems to shine. I may make the square a little thinner, but it seems to work good so far.

I think you should get a new rear sight. While I use a slide focus/index on very close targets and a front sight index/focus on mid-range targets.....everything past 7 yards gets boxed.

There are some nice low profile offerings out there. But....in the meantime...I'd play around with it. Anything new always teaches you something. It may even help you see the front sight during the slide cycle easier. You may even try different shapes on the rear. Let us know how it works out.

I shot that group at 7 yards with the SIG 239 9mm in the picture...no rear sight on the gun. Yes you can hit with it...but it's not any easier, that's for sure.

It can work...I think you'd be better off having something on there though...even something like the XS rear sight would be better than nothing. I'd just get a set of sights with a WIDE rear notch.

I shot my Warren Tactical sights in match tonight (wide notch, narrow post) and tore some shit up with them. They definitely get the nod.

I'm working on getting a whole new gun. Until then I may play around with the old rear sight. My little square seems to be nice for close ranges and low light. If the gun were more accurate I'd feel like I cheated myself, but as it is it hasn't seemed to hurt anything.

Looking for an XD. Until then I'll keep playing around with this thing.

I tweaked it a little. Instead of a gold box I now have a thin vertical white stripe of reflective tape. it looks about twice as big as it is in the crappy picture because it's reflective, but I really like it. Just put the dot on the I.
