I wouldn't pay to have that done......

When the thumb safety is out of the gun you can use a small drill bit, but I'd get a small dremel bit from Lowes or Home Depot. they have some small round cutting bits.

If the problem is the detent, I would send it back to CZ and let them do it. Doing it yourself may void the warrenty. Plus, they could look a little deeper to see if there is something else causing the problem. Give them a call. Nice folks and easy to deal with.

If we send it to CZ, they'll likely booger it up since it's a Dan Wesson 1911......

Having worked on 1911s in the Marines and in civilian life since 1972 I'd have to echo some of the above posts and say that the problem is one of three things, in no particular order:

1) The safety is being nudged up by the shooting hand under recoil.

B) The detent recess in the safety lever is too shallow.

iii) The detent plunger/spring assembly has some type of issue -- dragging, weak, etc.

There's a comparatively larger amount of mass in entended safety levers, and that mass when moving under recoil tends to stay moving. Just a touch by the thumb migh be all it takes to move it enough, or perhaps the cumulative effect of several rounds' worth of recoil bumps it up enough that the safety engages.

Personally, Without having the gun in hand for inspection I'd try a new detent plunger/spring assembly from Brownells first, and see what effect that has on the issue. If a new plunger/spring assembly doesn't work, then use a small Dremel grinding stone to hollow out the plunger recess in the safety lever a bit more. GO SLOWLY. Grind-try-grind again; sneak up on it. Don't be like the Norwegian carpenter that cut the board twice and it's still too short. I'd not recommend a drill bit; safeties are typically hardened and you might have difficulty even getting a twist drill to cut. Plus, a twist drill is not the correct tool for the job. You have a very nice handgun of which you are understandably fond and proud; don't mess it up buy trying to take a cheap shortcut. That's like putting a $79 scope on a $750 rifle, and who does that?

Your comment about the safety working like butter (I think that's what you meant) is indicative that there is insufficient detent plunger force on the safety lever, or the plunger dimple is too shallow. IMO and experience, the 1911 safety lever, especially extended safeties, should require a bit of force to operate --it should not operate "like butter" because the result of that condition is what you are experiencing with your 1911.

I agree with all of the above. I also have to ask, somewhat more directly than good ole Lycan, whether you shoot with your thumb on top of the safety lever. If you don't, and I suspect that is the case, you should.

Someone on another board had a similar problem, but it was an embarassing re-assembly mistake.

http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=750122

It may not be the exact cause, but if you have taken the gun completely apart recently, it's worths asking.

I agree with Noah_Zark in trying out a new set of detent assembly / spring. It's highly likely since you haven't had any issue since owning the gun.

New springs can never hurt. Myself, I was taught to shoot a 1911 with my thumb ontop of the safety... It could be any of the reasons stated above. If you want, drive to New Castle and have Lycan take a look, I'll bring some beer... lol
