You will not go wrong with either one. I prefer the Beretta as I like metal guns, and the Beretta points better for me.

Never cared for slide mounted safeties...they get in the way when you grab the slide. They have always been more of a PITA to me if you actually use one for carry, too.
If I wanted a metal frame, I'd look hard at the Sig 226/229 or the BHP. I'd prefer a used version of the above listed items over a NEW Beretta. RE: the xd....if you like the way it handles, there's nothing wrong with getting another. Consistency in your handling procedures sure won't hurt you. Trust your gut...range guns should be fun. Were this a "life or death" firearm, trust what's made a name for themselves and offers you what you need. Cost should be considered AFTER the dependability and objective needs (capacity, size, weight, etc) have been addressed, IMO.

XD all the way.
Why? No crappy DA/SA trigger. You're used to the platform. Easy transition. You can use the same holster(s) No manual safety and hammer. It's just a better gun. it just is.

I also have an XD .40
I have never shot the Beretta, but I like the way it feels in my hand. In all, you want to practice with the gun you will be CC. If you buy another XD, you will have that much more practice with the platform. I also do not like the external safety on the Beratta or the DA/SA trigger. Although you did want to stay in the 5-6 bill range, I would seriously consider a Sig 229 or 239. Also, check out the M&P by Smith, and the Glock 17 or 19 |

guess ill throw in my 2 pennies.
i have both an xd-9 and a 92fs... luv em both. in all honesty, though, they are kinda 2 different animals. i mean, yes, you are famiiar with the xd in the 40 cal but if you really wanted another xd, why not look into just getting another barrel/ mag since i believe you can convert them easily (i could be wrong on this). the beretta is a longer proven design (and by no means am i knocking my xd), its heavier (sucks up recoil more), and has a longer barrel. the beretta is also more capable of more tinkering (grips, lasers, hammers, etc). i have shot the hell out of both of them and really couldnt just pick one. i love the xds size, weight, and extra capacity. it is also accurate and cosmetically pleasing (i have the 2-tone). both are easy to work on and both have been 100% reliable. in my opinion, id get the beretta 1st. you can then wait to see if springfield makes an xdm in 9mm... i mean, if you can hold 16 40s in the xdm, that should translate to like 20+ 9mms! well take my rambling for what its worth... as much as i like my xd, id still go beretta 1st. |

I own a XD45 full size 13+1, and I love it. I shot the living hell out of mine, with "0" fails, jams or any malfunctions for that matter. I couldn't ask for anything more.
I agree with P-11 that you already are familiar with the XD platform, and that it would in fact be an easy transition for you, and you can use the same holster. On the other hand I really do like the Beretta too. I like the metal frame, and that exposed barrel is pretty sexy looking. I am going to get the M9 myself. If it is good enough for the US Armed Forces, it should be good enough for me. Bottom line is they are both excellent firearms, and you would not go wrong with either of them. If you want to stick with something you already know, go XD. If you want something different the Beretta is the one. I personally like changing to something a little different, and being familiar with an array of different firearms is always good. Good luck.
