I think we all need to find those pistols or revolvers that we shoot well and hang on to them. As to the revolvers, are you shooting single action or trying to learn to shoot double action really well? As to the autos, are you shooting a constant action trigger such as a Glock or S&W M&P or are you shooting such as a 1911 style. I currently own S&W revolvers, Ruger revolvers, Ruger .22 auto, S&W M&P and Springfield 1911. I have owned, but no longer own Kahr, Browning, Glock and other S&W and Rugers. Doesn't mean they are not fine handguns, but I simply will not keep a firearm of any kind that I cannot make shoot well.

I tend to squeeze hell out of the grip with the non trigger hand, hang on and strive for no sight movement when the gun fires. If you are getting sight movement, it doesn't matter if the barrel is long or short. Movement is more apparent with the longer barrel, but it is still there. Good shooting.

Semi autos aren't necessarily faster than revolvers. A person that has a lot of time behind a revolver can probably shoot it as fast or faster with better accuracy than a semi. That said, a person with a lot of time with a semi can out do the average revolver person. It just comes down to practice, practice, practice with what you are going to carry. For revolver folks (double action) if you want to see how well you shoot in DA participate in a PPC match, I guarentee that the first time you will be humbled, I was. But, with practice (and a lot of handloading, LOL) you will get better. I am actually more comfortable shooting my revolvers DA (at any distance) because of my PPC practice. For those that haven't shot PPC the first course of fire is 12 rounds in 20 seconds at 7 yds (21 feet). Yes, that means a reload must be done. You then go back top 15 yds, 25 yds and 50 yds. The target is a B-27. You shoot standing, barricade, prone, kneeling, etc. Even at the 50 yd range, the people I shot with, myself included, shot it all DA. Because of the practice I actually didn't feel comfortable shooting SA.

With diatribe over, I do like my semi's also (Ruger KP90, S&W 5906, Ruger and Smith 22's) and practice with them so that no matter what is at hand, if needed, I am ready.

I have spent more time in the recent past shooting revolvers more than semiautos; I recently have done some additions/deletions to the collection, but still find that I shoot DA revolver better that DA/SA semiauto; on the revo side I have a Ruger GP-100 w/ 6" barrel, a Ruger SP101 w/ 3" barrel (newer addition), and a S&W 642 subby; on the semiside I have a Beretta 92D Centurion (newer acquisition; the D designates double action only and the trigger characteristics mimick those of a double action revolver); hopefully with some more practice, I can get the groups size and POA/POI better with the Ruger SP101 & Beretta 92D

A suggestion: If you haven't already been there, go to the Ruger forum, register, log in, and in the revolver forum and Gunsmithing forum there, you will find reference to a document called the IBOK, or Iowegen's Book Of Knowledge. Iowegen is a retired gunsmith who wrote a 19 page document on how to tune up a GP100, and by default, since they are nearly identical, an SP101. It's free for the asking. Or, email me and I'll send you a PDF version of it. He allows it to be distributed as long as his name stays on it. It is incredibly well done.

I did the whole routine to my wife's 3" SP101. The difference in DA and SA trigger action has to be experienced to be believed. It still isn't as good as a S&W, but it is a whole lot better than it was. It took me a very pleasant 5 hours with a dremel, buffing wheel, and some Arkansas stones, but it was sure worth it. I was very careful "not" to mess with the sear.

I dont know if its the grip angle or what, but all the revolvers I've shot made me feel like I was gonna hit my feet instead of the target.

I was just shooting yesterday and I was in fact more accurate with my 2" Taurus .38 than my new FN 9mm. Both guns had yet to be fired, so I wasn't familiar with one more than the other. I was shooting the .38 mostly SA. As I said in my range report, it was quite cool out, my hands were cold and I was probably shivering a bit. Hopefully that'll change when the weather warms because I would like to use the 9mm as my primary carry gun. But, as of yesterday, I shot the .38 better. I've actually always preferred revolvers over semi-autos, but got the FN for the capacity.

The model 85 Taurus .38SP is a remarkably nice snub nosed revolver regardless of price. I've rented one three different times and find it to be very nice to shoot both SA and DA. I wish my wife had gotten one of those instead of the Ruger SP101. The Ruger is heavier, but even after 5 hours of working on the inside of it (took it apart till there weren't any two parts still fastened together) with Arkansas stones and buffing all the rubbing surfaces to chrome like polish with the Dremel and Black emery, and replacing the trigger spring, the DA trigger pull, while it's now smooth and doesn't stack, is very heavy - I haven't measured it but it has to be all of 12 pounds. The SA trigger pull cleaned up nicely and is almost as good as her S&W 686, almost being the key word.

Still, I think the Taurus Model 85B is a better gun than the SP101 by significant margin.

I'm not surprised you are more accurate with the 85 than with the semi-auto. Semi-auto's are generally not target guns. They are built to keep shots in a 7" to 10" circle rapid fire at 25'. Polymer combat semi-auto's that shoot smaller than 2.5" groups at 25' off a rest are not all that common. Revolvers, other than snubbies, can usually shoot an inch or better at 25 yards off a rest if the shooter's eyes are good enough to hold that close a sight picture.

Since I have a wide selection of both types, I have a fair number of different weapons to play with but for sheer accuracy and speed in DA, or in SA, I much prefer a Model 14 with a 6" barrel in 0.38 special. The trigger was worked over many years ago and it breaks just like glass. Close behind is a Model 67 in 0.38 Spec, also with a trigger that has been worked on. Dave_n
