Default Finger on the trigger

My son (Joe Smith) came by yesterday with a friend to do some kayaking. After a fun time at the lake, he takes out his carry gun and shows it to his Dad. I wasn't crazy about the way they were handing the gun back and forth but I bit my tounge and let it go. Then Joe turns the gun sideways and I noticed his finger was on the trigger. I yelled "Get your finger off that trigger."

Now, I have only been to two group shoots but have listened to the prayer very carefully, Joe has been to many and should be showing me the correct way to handle a firearm.

So, the next time you see Joe at a shoot, give him a big Boo-Hiss.

Oh well, I guess a mothers' job is never done.

Tattling on your own son, bad form. If someone wants to confess making a mistake, let them air thier own dirty laundry. I can see that you're making light of it, but you can't assume everyone's best buds here and will get a chuckle out of it.

Firearms safety is everyone's responsibility, not just the shooter / gun handler.

It's also the responsibility of the firearms instructor, the range safety officer, our friends and of course, our dear mothers.

Constant mental awareness keeps us all "switched on".

I salute you.

Yet another example of how experience and expertise DO NOT go hand in hand.

I do a good bit of climbing too....another activity which has no room for screw-ups. I don't care if it's a climber who's been climbing for 2 days who points something out to me, or someone who was just on the cover of the lastest Rock and Ice magazine.... nor do I have a problem telling someone with more experience than I have that there's something they missed. It's just the name of the game.

I'm surprised. We are usually very aware of trigger fingers and sweeping.

It goes to show that anyone can get complacent. And the ergonomics of modern guns is so that your finger feels very comfortable on the trigger.

Anyway. Everyone can get a little lax sometimes. But I know that Joe is extremely aware of muzzle direction.

It's something you have to pay attention to at all times.

They are usually very good about safety. Anybody can get a little lax from time to time. I just don't want is to become a habit.

Well, it was either this or putting him over my knee and giving him a good spanking. He's a little too big for that now.

HeHe, if I mess up and my mom catches me, she stands on a chair so she can look me in the eye and says as seriously as she can "You're still not too big for me to put over my knee!" Fortunately she lives a good distance away, or she'd be in for some sore knees if she saw half of my screw ups.

Sorry if I came off sounding like a turd. You teach that boy a lesson any way you see fit. Momma knows best!

Wow, I can see the red glow on the horizon from Joe's face. Impressive.

The two biggest points I press on new shooters is trigger and muzzle discipline, and I echo what Synergy said; It doesnt matter that youre new, no one will think less of you if you go out of your way to practice muzzle and trigger control, and if someone with more 'experience' mocks you on it, feel free to mock them right back.
