It is the tool that came with the pistol it is different sized screw driver heads. I normally use it to remove the grip screw just because it is always in the case. I have seen them pictured with Mak's before.

cigarman is on a distinguished road
Default Re: Makarov

The tool is just what it looks like, a combo screwdriver and general purpose tool for the mak. They were shipped with all IJ70 (commercial) maks.

I am the Cigarman from the Makarov forums. I have a fair collection of maks. Of the IJ series I have an IJ70-17A, IJ70-18-A and an AH (high capacity); a false hi cap (AH fram eand standard 8 round mag); an IJ70-18 AS (Stainless/Nickel finish) I also have a Mak pellet pistol (built on a real mak frame). The 17 0r 18 refers to .380

I also have an East German military form 1960 through 1965 (last year they were made. In addition I have a Simson-Suhl East German that was the commercial version of the miltary of which less than 700 were made.

I also have two Russian military pistols and several Bulgarians, including a chrome model thst is referred to as the Bulgarian Naval model

Miltex, an American firm which produced surgical supplies in Bugaria contacted for an upgraded mak in several finishes called "Miltex" models in the '90s. There are also Chinese maks (2 versions), but I only collect Eastern Block pistols.

In addition to the PA-63 that was posted earlier in this thread there are other versions including the R-61 which is a PPK-sized version issued to hungarian politicos and secret police (I have a couple of them) and the commercial versions of them noted as SMC-318 and SMC-380, among others are still made.

BTW, both the 9mm Mak and the .380 use the same mags; only the barrel differs. In order to change from one caliber to another the the fixed barrel must be removed with a special tool.

The .380 is 9X17, the 9mm Mak is 9X18 and a 9mm Parabellum (luger) is 9X19; however the .380 and 9mm Para (as well as the .38 and .357, are 9mm bullets, while the 9mm Mak is 9.2 mm. It is dangerous to shoot a .380 in a 9mm Mak and not possible to chamber a 9mm Mak ina .380 barrel.

A Mak can only be chambered in 9mm Para if one uses a helical-cut chambered barrel (that effectively "shreds" the cartridge by allowing it to expand an absorb some of the recoil since the Mak is a blowback design). While these have been made, they have a very short barrel and component life and have not been imported into the US.

The so called "Polish Mak" P-64 shown in the posts is not a mak but simply a PPK -like pistol chambered in that cartrigde. Similarly the Hungarian P-63 and others are really PP and PPK knockoffs. The P-64 is a very heavy pistol and the PA-63 is very light in weight because the former uses a stell frame and the latter, aluminum.

Also the Master Gunsmith for KBI has a small gunshop in Palmyra. His name is Jim Heverling.

They were the grips that came on the pistol when I bought it, and I asked the guy who owned it since new and he never changed anything.
