XD45 Mag release

I finally made a decision on which 45 I was getting. Now my question is, does anybody else with the XD45 have problems with the Mag release being rather stiff?

have the XD 45 compact . . . nope, works really well, check to see if there's any preservative built up in it from the Factory

Sprayed a little gun oil down there and it seems to be working much better.

From my experience it is a matter of breakin. The design is such that the magazine release is very tight, especially with a full mag, for the first couple hundred of rounds. The guys on XD-Talk are constantly fielding this question. It is not a problem just a matter of putting enough rounds down the pipe to loosen things up a little. Just another excuse to go to the range.

I'll stick my 45 cents in. Bill said it right, I shoot a XD45 5" Tatical you have to run a few hundred to get things working smooth. I load 6 Mags at a time and found that the springs in the mags can varry a little in tention from Mag to Mag.

The spring presses the plate/latch to lock the magazine. When you press the mag release button it pushes the bottom part of the plate/latch toward the magazine which moves the top part with the latch away from the magazine and releases it.

I dunno if they make a lighter spring, but that would run the risk of not keeping the magazine locked


The only way to lighten it would be to go short on the magazine. If you have a full magazine your creating more of a downward force on the latch. That force has to be overcome by pushing the mag release button.

If they make lighter magazine springs this would lessen force. XD magazine springs are quite stiff.

The magazines are stainless so they aren't going to wear or break in. The plate/latch though may wear or break in a little though.

if it's a magazine tension problem, usually pressing upwards on the bottom will relieve it enough to allow it to work better when unloading or changing magazines

I think mine was a bit stiff when I first got it, but it was my first semi auto, so I didn't notice it because I didn't have anything to compare to. Now that I have other guns, I do remember it being a bit stiff, but things are fine now and pushing up on the bottom of a full mag makes it easier to push the mag release.
