You said you don't like the looks of a Glock, but I'm not really sure why you care. It's going to be a carry weapon, which means it's going to get beat up and worn. It's the nature of a carry pistol. I'm pretty sure if you give Glock a chance, you'll see how it's ultimately a completely reliable pistol and it shoots straight as an arrow. I was the furthest thing from a Glock fanatic for the same reason as you, appearance. However, I gave it a chance, and now I don't know if I want to carry anything other than a G30. If you get yourself a good looking weapon to carry, you're going to cringe at the first sign of holster wear. For carrying, I suggest function before form. After all, the only reason you should ever be fingering the trigger on that weapon is for practice, or if your life is in danger.

... or of course when you need to turn off that light and you don't feel like getting out of bed.

It is above your price range, But id save the extra money and check out the HK .45 compact when they come out!!! not a USP but a HK .45

the hk .45 is the best fit in my hand compared to all other .45 compacts

I am buying a GP100 to replace the one a sold a few years ago and regret ever since, that is why my budget is under 600.00
i recommend the XD 40 tactical, service model, or sub compact. depending on the size that you need/prefer. any of these can be purchased for around $500. and since springfield is so awesome the have convieniently provided a mag holster, gun holster, 2 mags and a speed loader at no extra cost.

I love my XD9 Service and carry it often, but the accessories that come with it are worthless unless at the range. The holster is cheap (I still use it at IDPA matches, but none the less its cheap) and personally I wouldn't use the mag holder outside of a match. The 16 round mags are nice, and the speed reloader takes time off loading for sure, but when considering a carry firearm the accessories that come with it are just bonuses. You will still have to buy a nice carry holster.
Past that, the XD series is very good as a carry firearm. I've shot probably over 3000 rounds through mine and I've never had a jam. This is why I carry it, I know when shit hits the fan it'll go bang. Do I have the only gun that is reliable? No, I'm sure not. I have buddies that swear up and down that Glocks are the best firearm on earth, and for them they are but after spending so much time with my XD, I totally trust the brand and use it as my personal carry gun. I am looking into an XD9 SubCompact though, I bought this gun with the intent of being a range gun but started carrying it. No real need to switch, but I'd rather have 2 XD's than one... you know, for the zombies.

i really like my xd...great carry gun.

If I were to buy another 9mm though, I think it would be the new walther 9mm carry (pps/pss?) or the p99...theyre fantastic weapons.

Glock 21 or XD 45 Tactical if you like the .45 ACP. I carry the G21.
