Default Questions for Philadelphia Sheriff Candidate Michael Untermeyer

I ran into Michael Untermeyer today on the subway who is running for Sheriff in Philadelphia.

As soon as I mentioned PAFOA he instantly made reference to the fact that the current Sheriff (Green) does not sign NFA forms, most likely due to the fact that fellow forum member michaelbane had already asked him about this:

http://www.pafoa.org/forum/philadelp...paperwork.html

I got his card and he told me to give him a call this week to talk a bit and I fully intend on trying to get a reading on where he stands on firearms issues (especially the problem with sign-offs) and more broadly crime in general.

If anyone has any questions they would like asked on their behalf please post them here and I'll make sure to do so.

I called Mr. Untermeyer yesterday and he requested that I send him the relevant information on NFA so I sent him a pretty good sized email explaining it all. He said to give him a call back in a few days once he digests it all.

Although I am new to this Forum,I have met and spoken with Mike Untermeyer on that issue and several other issues concerning law enforcement problems relating to philadelphia county, the deputies under John Green have been under utilized on many fronts including firearms registation, the office of sheriff in philadelphia has fallen to a level of boarderline patronage employee's,this May would be the first entrance exam given for the position of Deputy in over 20 years, this was brought about I believe by Michael's constant questioning of the Sheriff about this issue, I also believe that Michael is very sincere in his efforts to better the Office of Sheriff,Michael was at one time an Asst.District Atty. in the Philadelphia court system prior to his appointment as a Deputy Atty Gen for the State of Pa. where he worked in the area drug enforcement and forfeitures. I believe that Mike will make the Sheriff's office accountable to the citzens of Philadelphia and to the State of Pa. for which there is very little of right now.

As a Phila Police Office I recived in the mail a political message from Mr. Untermeyer and to me it was very upsetting to think that this man could come into phila and try to run for office and he dosent even know the office. His message to voters was very misinformed. He blames current Sherifff John Green a police officer for over 20 years the problems that face Phila today saying things that should be directed to the Police Dept. it had nothing to do with Sheriff or his Deputies. As a Cop I found it sickening

Any more detail on that more specifically? I do believe one of his platforms is that the Sheriff's office in Philadelphia is not effectively used as a crime-fighting force and could be leveraged to help put more "feet on the ground" so to speak, and in turn reduce crime.

Your insight into the matter would be greatly appreciated because of your profession.

Also, welcome to the forum, it's great to have you.

Prior to my retirement I had worked for John Green for over twenty years and he is by far the worst manager of a law Enforcement Agency that this city has seen in some time, his management style was so ineffective that the Legistature saw fit to pass an admendment to the Rules of Civil procedure just to allow the City Of Philadelphia to serve orginal Procees papers by any competant adult as opposed to Deputy Sheriff's only, the State asked for the monies that were owed to State inregards to Sheriff's sales, and the monies were short to the tune of $11 Million dollars, the Sheriff had his books audited and because of inaccurate postings by his staff the number dropped to $3 million dollars that the State was owed,he has had 3 addittional audits and they all say the same thing, the worst management style of any Sheriff in this state,we wont even get into various work grievences that has cost the city of Phila. over Millions of dollars in not just legal fees but pay outs to the workers involved,This the first time the Sheriff has had oppostion to his office, this City is almost exclusively democratic and the party holds a huge lead in voter regristration,so if the party gives the endorsment to the incumbent than often as not ,the incumbent is re-elected,however the party did not endorse him nor did the FOP,so I am hoping that his time as Sheriff is over and maybe the office of Sheriff of Phila.County can regain some of the respect and integrity that it has lost over the years.

If Untermeyer is honest about following Federal and Commonwealth law regarding NFA firearms and other issues, then he's got my vote.

Now, as to John Green- the man has run his deparment into the ground and made it a mockery of what a Sheriff's Office should be. He should have taken lessons from Denny Nau in Centre County.

I agree that Phila. Deputy Sheriffs should be used more extensively in general law enforcement. However, Untermeyer will require some legislation at the state level to accomplish this.
