The "drop at comb" of the AK stock was dimensioned for iron sights. As such, any mounting option that placers the optic higher than the iron sights will begin to present cheekweld problems. Granted it's a matter of degree because even the ultimak puts the optic on a somewhat higher plane but AFAIK it's the "lowest" mounting option currently available.

The copes unit appears to put the optic at least 3/4 + inches higher than the ultimak. The rail on the ultimak is actually belowe the plane of the iron sights whereas the plane of the copes appears to be on the same plane as the irons if not a tad higher.

copes

The cheekweld issue is the reason the OEM com bloc side rail optics mount is THE absolute worst option as it places optics well above the plane of the irons sights.

This guy doesn't have a cheekweld, he has a chinweld.
Tony is spot on about the Ultimak vs Copes. The other disappointing aspect about a majority of the aftermarket rail systems is that in terms of fit or function most have fallen short. This is mainly due to the slight variations with many of the AK platforms. It appears a very elusive thing to be able to make one adjustable rail systems to fit all. I believe Mark LaRue is working on a rail system but until I hear of something more definitive the Ultimak is the way to go.

Very nice ak. Ever think about putting some of those rail covers over the unused sections for comfort or are you trying to keep the weight down?

Edit...
Just occured to me... during rapid fire does the heat from the gas tube and barrel mess with the optic?(micro mentioned earlier?)

There are low profile "ladder" rail covers on there - they are fine. You should be wearing gloves when running an AK for serious purposes.

No issues with heat and late model Aimpoint optics - I won't vouch for any other brand.
