Default Flashlights

Whats the point of having a flashlight? I notice a lot of CCer/OCers carry flashlights. Whats the point?

Don't take this as flippant, but to see. Humans are visual animals. Deprived of sight most people's ability to respond to situations is severely compromised.
Even during the day you can find yourself in a low light situation. In a defensive situation target identification is BIG time important.
Some of the newer high power mini lights are also weapons in their own ways, to blind an attacker, or some have the ends set up to be used as impact weapons.
On duty (during the day) I could not begin to count how many times I use my Surefire 6P.
When out and about I do not always carry a good light, but if I know I will be out at night you can count on it.
I always have at least one small LED keychain light, as I have them on all of my key sets.
I also have 2 M-3 tac lights, on for my FNP9 and one for my Taurus 24/7 .45.

An inexpensive, but not cheap, flashlight will be one of the most important things that you could have on your person. I was at Best Buy in Harrisburg one night, and the power went out. A couple of people close to me got a little panicky, right up until I turned on the Streamlight Strion that I carry in my pocket. Instant calm. Moments later, the emergency lighting came on. If you take someone's vision from them, in an unfamiliar environment, that person may freak out.

Also, statistically, most shootings occur in low light environments, so a flashlight will definately help in target ID.

There are so many reasons that flashlight is a good investment, that I can't even list them all here. But it's a good thing to have.

A flash light can be used as a defensive tool. It can also be used if you need to shoot in a low light situation.

Some would say that it tells the bad guy where to shoot. If you place the light in your weak hand, then extend the arm it will give the impression you are a step or two from where your center mass is.

A small flash light is also a good general purpose tool, like a pocket knife.

Do we have any recommendations? Something small enough to have in your pocket but could be slipped in a mount, and be useful on a rifle? I normally use the extremely bright LED on my phone as an emergency light by putting it in camera mode. It's unusually bright for a phone light. Think of a flash, that just stays on.

But something maybe more designed for this purpose would be worth the money if I am ever going to shoot the damn racoon off my back porch one of these nights.

Among other uses.

Here is a thread a member had made. He reviewed a ton of lights. Hope it helps.

I carry a 6p with me all the time for everything. It is hands down the best self defence tools that I have. when I carry a gun or collapsable batton the 6p is the next thing I grab. I have held the 6p in my left hand and pointed it right in a smart asses eyes and clocked him with my right fist dropping him, I never had to go for my gun. IMO if you carry a gun, carry a 6p. They even make clip on the belt holder for the light and an extra clip if you so desire to carry extra clips with you. The price for the light was never in question, own one and you'll see, no pun intended.

6P is a great light I love mine. But it eats expensive batteries very fast.

If you don't have a serious fighting flashlight go to Wal-Mart and look in the camping section for a Coleman MAX light rated at 115 lumens and runs on cheap AAA cells for six hours. Look for the one that claims to reach out to 84 meters. It is less than 25 dollars. It is brighter than an 65 lunen P6 and much cheaper to feed. The body just needs a little friction tape. The other trick is to double loop the strap around the front groove in the body and it leaves just enough for a snug grip around your 4 fingers

Because when other people are fumbling around in the dark trying to see with their cell phone you can see what the hell you're doing.
