Default Ruger 22/45 MKIII - Which optic?

I just purchased the Ruger 22/45 MKIII with the 5.5 inch barrel. I'd like to get an optic and I am soliciting opinions and experience. The OAL of the pistol is 9.5 inches so many hangun scopes may be two big.

First question.. Scope or Red Dot?
Second question.. Which one and why?

Thanks in advance...

M

I have that exact model pistol. I bought a Tasco Red Dot and used it for a while but it was just, "Ok". Next I switched the stock front sight for a Hi-Viz fiber optic sight. That was a huge improvement for me.

2 cents.

i've run a cheapo 2x tasco pistol scope on my 5.5" mk2 for about 20 years. i'm content with it. no batteries. the fine crosshairs don't obscure small targets at longer range.

OperatorX- Welcome to the forum. I have a Tasco red dot on a Ruger GP 100, and like it a lot. For close range I don't think magnification is necessary, and you won't be doing any long range work with the 22/45. Once you get it dialed in, it's very accurate, and it's cheap and battery efficient. A 22/45 is on my "get" list, and a red dot will go on top of it, for sure.

Enjoy the forum, and again, welcome.

Depends on how you're going to use it. Serious shooting for accuracy then a glass scope. Plinking, having some fun, a red dot is great.

I agree ^^

On my ruger and browning for competition (steel challenge type) I used red dots. The ruger wore a tasco PDP2 and never missed a beat. The browning had a simmons red dot that sucked and was replaced with something else (I don't remember what).
