I think that you would probably be pretty happy with a mid range scope in the $500 range like a nice Bushnell elite 4200 or something that would be on par with that. For $450 I like my LRS, but as I said I haven't gotten to test it out yet. I know for a fact that you can see out to 500 or 600 yards clearly with either of those scopes, and with some other scopes like the Nikon Buckmaster, etc. I think that you will probably be best served on buying more ammunition and spending the time behind the trigger. Ammunition is getting so expensive and it's probably just gonna go up. If you're interested in getting into reloading just to save some money and a little hobby to waste some time, you might want to spend the money you were gonna spend on the scope on a progressive reloader and roll your own. There will be differing opinions, but the scopes in the $500 range should get you to 500 or 600 yards alright. I don't know, I personally just don't care to spend $1,000 on a scope to put on a rifle that won't shoot over 500 yards or so. If it was a dedicated prairie dog rifle or something like that, ok, maybe, but like you said no 500 yard prairie dogs in your area.
Great points Tomcat088. I tend to go overboard with stuff like this, so it's nice to have someone keep me in check

If you want to spend a grand on a scope, it is your hard earned money and you can do whatever you like. I just personally don't think that some of the scopes that cost $1,000 are necessarily twice as good as some of the $500 scopes. In the 500-600 yard range, if you're not shooting at small targets, you probably won't even use that extra nice glass to it's maximum capability. With most shooters, the limiting factor to how well they can shoot is the shooter, not usually the mechanical accuracy of the rifle (there are exceptions). With that said, getting more ammo and being able to spend more time behind the trigger and get used to reading the wind and smooth trigger pull, etc. can more than make up the difference between a $500 and $1k scope at 500 yards. If you can see the target well enough to quarter it, and the scope has a true and repeatable zero, then you can hit it. Shoot, with that extra $500, you could just put it towards savings for some other AR, reloading press and supplies, some other used rifle, ammo. I just think that if you're gonna shoot at that range, you might be better served with other things. $1K glass is nice, but so is actually be able to afford the rifle that you build and enjoy it is very nice as well. $500 will get you a pretty nice piece of glass, I would call it "slightly above medoicre", but it dang sure will put you ahead of the $250 and $300 scopes, and these days that is still quite alot of glass.

I completely agree with you (maybe I was unclear)!

By the way, is this the millet scope you have? http://www.swfa.com/pc-12807-1395-mi...iflescope.aspx

I got that you agreed, lol, just wanted to try to nail that down some more. Yes that is the rifle scope that I have the Millett LRS. Here is a thread that I posted after getting it if you'd like to see some other photos of the actual scope. http://www.pafoa.org/forum/optics-46...t-lrs-1-a.html . I'm not sure if swfa has the scopes in stock, I know that they've been really hard to keep in stock. Realize that this scope is HUGE, it's big. Depending on your set up, you might need some 20 moa bases to make the scope clear the barrel. It has a 35mm tube and a 56mm front objective, but it does come with some decent rings that are pretty tall to help with the task. I wouldn't get that scope from SWFA if I was you because there are alot of places you can get it cheaper. Check out Donnie at Big River Tactical http://www.bigrivertactical.com/cata...80/5396194.htm . Mine was $449.49 WITH shipping. Donnie is a great guy to deal with and if he doesn't have the scopes in stock, he will have Millett send it to you directly as they make them. There have been few complaints about this scope, but one has been that the reticle might not be accurate at 25x, I have yet to check this out, but just something you should be aware of.

I have that exact scope on my DPMS. I have not tried it over 100yrds but I really like the scope. It does exactly what I need it to and is very pleasant to look through. I have about 1000 rnds through the rifle and it seems to hold its zero. It really seems to be a good scope for the money.

addicted2freedom-Unless you are going to get into serious long range shooting, it should serve your purposes quite well. I am no authority on scopes so take it for what its worth lol, but I am happy with it.

It is a beast, I will agree. I will say that in that photo he has the optional sunshade which does add quite a bit of length to it. It's already huge, but when you add the sunshade it looks WAY HUGE. I think it's a great scope for the money. TONS of features and the glass looks pretty good.

Well... pretty sure I'm getting this scope. I've read a lot of good things about it. Nothing in the same price range really compares to it.

I wish it had an illuminated reticle like the TRS1 though :/

On Millett's site, it says 3 new models coming in 2008. Have any info on those? Maybe one will have an illuminated reticle!

I talk to the owner of Millett, who helps engineer them and find other features that people want on them. It has already been mentioned that most people want the new LRS to have an illuminated reticle. Some also want a FFP reticle (first focal plane) and a few others have requested that there be .1 mil clicks for adjustment. I'm not sure there there will be .1 mil clicks because that's usually a high end feature, but everyone is pretty sure that the illuminated recticle will come to pass. From what I have been seeing though, this probably won't occur into the start of 2009 or the very very end of 2008. As I stated, that's not something that I can be definate about, that's just some of the talk around the hide and the owner of Millett.

Yeah, I have the sunshade on it . I however made a mistake. Its not the LRS . Its this one http://www.orctechnology.com/servlet...25X56mm/Detail
It only has the 30MM tube instead of the 35MM, plus no locks on the windage and elevation. And has 1/8 moa adjustments. I was looking at the LRS but the dealer had this one in stock and I am an impatient person lol, but it serves its purpose well for me.
