Default Was this guy blowing smoke?

Attended a gun show over the weekend. I asked about availability of M-14 surplus rifle and was told ALL surplus were destroyed. Private ownership is not permitted.

Was this true, or was he uninformed?

As far as I know, it's true. The M14s that you see are semi auto only.

if what i've heard was true than yes they are gone, or not ever going to see a civilian market. Supposedly there was even a private who came up with a way to demill them to make them semi auto but they wouldn't bite. Sure woulda been nice for CMP shooters

Most of the M14 service rifles were destroyed during the Klinton administration even though the full auto selector lug could have been milled off and the rifles sold for surplus.

There are some transferable M14 rifles in the NFA registry and the last I saw that were running $10-12K.

That would go against the BATFE's "once a MG always a MG"

The transferables are rewelds of demilled receivers.

There was a company (cant remember the name) that was doing S/A rewelds of DEMILLED M14 receivers. The atf ruled that they were MG's

Correct, I forgot to add that statement to my post!

"The transferables are rewelds of demilled receivers."

Not all were rewelds, some were amnesty registered or "found" and registered before the 1986 MG ban.

Which would mean that those M14's like the amnesty registered "bring back" M16's
are still stolen goverment property.

Yes it is "lost or stolen" property, but under an amnesty no questions asked!

As far as the M-14s that are in civvie hands, don't forget that quite a few of them came from the Department of Energy.

Guarding Nuke plants gets you some pretty interesting hardware, including a particularly singular Colt Upper (called, of course, the DOE upper)

The DOE had to reg their title2 stuff on Form 4s so when they disposed of it they were transferable.

Were Smith Enterprise M-14's rewelds or did they separately MFG their receivers? As far as I know most of the M-14's were destroyed during Clintons reign but some survived and are still being used in Iraq. Instead of warehousing them he had them destroyed and now out taxpayers dollars are going into buying new ones from Springfield Armory...although I believe they are all semi auto used primarily in the DMR role.
